it better be good.

but seriously, i was finishing up on a clients system. did my normal thing with MSConfig, HiJack this, Adaware, Spybot etc, in safe mode and normal boot.

then i installed PestPatrol and ran it, WOWSERS< it's currently at 1500 obj found and still going.

of course pestpatrol also deletes every cookie that was associated with the trojans, but wowsers, 1500 is quite a bit for spybot and adaware to miss.

btw, pestpatrol is by computer associates.

edit:

have any of your seen anything like this before?

adaware found over 1200
Spybot found just over 200
Pestpatrol is on 6000+ and still going.

Pest Patrol misses a lot of stuff. This is better Plus it lets you schedule unattended scans.

I've tried Pest Patrol, Webroot's SpySweeper, and the one linked above. Of the 3 the Aluria product works the best.

which order?

it seems to me, no matter which order i do them, all of them find something the others didn't.

pestpatrol seems to get more than adaware and spybot tho, overall. spysweeper i've only used on one clients system and it's a decent product also.

i'll try the aluria one also.

hey, i'm always looking for an easier way to do my job.

one advantage of pestpatrol is, i also have a corporate version that allows me to scan up to 25 pc's on my network. it uses network neighborhood to find the pc's and you can scan the client pc's from the server.

We use PestPatrol here in our corperate environment... using it for network scans, etc.

I find that it works okay, and does get a lot of the spyware... but it just does not compare with the Adaware/Spybot combo in my experiance...

If it's working great for you though, that's awesome :)

after the adaware spybot combo, i'm running pestpatrol, and it's currently at 2300 obj found, most of them gator cookies, so i guess getting rid of the gator program was more important, but hey, why be burdened with all this junk?

ya, in my experience, none of them are as good as all three.

I tried the Pest Patrol Corporate version here at work....looked good although I had better luck with the Webroot corporate version.

I still have both Pest Patrol and the Aluria product on my machines at home. Use them well as SpywareBlaster.....since doing that I rarely if ever find spyware on my systems. That seems to be the holy trinity of anti-spyware products.

while we're on the subject, is there a good/effective real-time spyware/adware scanner? (like an anti-virus program will catch them before they do harm).

i have so many little cousins who accumulate junk of their PC's within a matter of months. of course, being the family "computer guy", i get the "my computer is so slow" calls. :(

i think it's tough. i don't think spyware can be recognized until you see how it behaves. hence usually after the fact. you can quarantine for known spyware stuff.

the new adaware se pro is very nice, use the adwatch program that runs in the bakground and it works great, there is also a plugin for lsb layering

i think adaware works fine, use in safe mode, cwshredder and spy bot
