Personal router @ work...for wi-fi use

Hi!
Not trying to bypass the firewall or anything like that...
Just wondering, If I were to use a personal router, connect the lan connection to it, then from the personal router to my office PC and share that signal via wireless with my phone

Can it be done ?

Can any router do this ? I have a spare Dir-655 somewhere

CAN it be done? Yes.

Is it ALLOWED to be done? Ask the local IT department, both for permission and for the proper way to do it so it doesn't cause problems on the company network.

This is the safe bet. If your workplace is larger and/or more "corporate," it's likely an acceptable use policy violation. Some places don't even allow outside user devices on a wireless network, never mind added networking infrastructure equipment.

Thank you!

I'm not doing anything that would compromise my job

the question wasn't about company policy
It's just a small office, with a lot of ground to be covered. If I get this ready and OK it (after explaining it...) it will be OK

In theory, without policies, is it as simple as connecting the new router, disabling DHCP and creating an SSID and PSK ?

I'd check with IT first. When I was in IT the thing that irritated us the most was people who brought their own routers, switches, servers etc and setup their own networks, even their own servers, without telling us. We had no documentation or backups of it, then when it failed, we were responsible for supporting it. Then you have the people who think it's smart to broadcast DHCP on the corporate network.... oh that was a fun day.

Yes it can be done. Hell it's easy as pie.

However I'd most likely either get a super duper warning or "Let go" if I ever did that at work. If you don't have Wifi, then there is a reason for that!

No way IT would let you setup your own personal access point. Either IT supply it or you do without.

Thank you all for your answers, but all of you are stuck on the "ask IT" part
Forget that...I know my limitations, and appreciate the guidance, but that is not a problem as I have stated before
Again, this is informational only...would it be that simple ?

Thanks!

Ask the IT department. They will be able to tell you.

They could have RADIUS setup, in which case, not it is not that simple. They could have MAC filtering, ACLs any number of things going on that would prevent this from being easy.
