Personal Health Insurance?

Howdy,

I have a job as a consultant and therefor don't get very good benefits through the consulting company and don't qualify for an through the company I work at. Does anyone have their own health insurance directly through a company and not related to our employment?

I'm looking for recommendations for places I can check out that don't charge insanely high prices and still have decent coverage. For my situation it'd be myself, my wife, and our daughter and they'd have to cover places in WI.

Thanks.

Yeah I used eHealthInsurance.com. They are pretty good to deal with. I started out with short-term temporary stuff and I'm switching to one of their Aetna plans. They're not as good as having it at a big company but it's pretty decent. FYI if you need maternity it *really* jacks the price up.

I've been self employed for several years and have used Cigna. I found the coverage good for what I pay, $95 a month.

There are places online that can compare different plans for you. I don't recall any right now but I've been on them before. Be sure to also check consumer reports for customer satisfaction because if the company refuses to pay claims, it doesn't matter how much "coverage" you bought.

Typically, people that get private health insurance get deductible based plans with a 80/20 payout for after the deductible runs out. This means that after the deductible is used up, the insurance company will pay 80% of claims while you pay 20%. After a certain yearly limit is reached, the insurance company will pay 100%. Copay & no deductible plans that employer provide are uncommon in private insurance but are available for a higher cost. There are also health savings plans now available that you may wish to consider.

Tried looking at their website but can't find anywhere to get a quote. Says you have to be a member of something already or whatnot. Site seems pretty confusing.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

aetna... definitely go aetna. they're a great insurance company and they cover chiropractic care (if you ever need it, it's good to know you're covered).

Check out Blue Cross Blue Shield, they offer better coverage than Aetna for individuals.
At least I was able to get a lower co-pay and deductiable with Anthem BC compared to Aetna.

this is true... i like bcbs, but i'm used to aetna right now because i'm on my dad's plan.

Yeah, I've checked BCBS and Aetna. Trying to compare monthly cost vs Deductible, etc. SO much cheaper when you have a company that pays for some of it. Contractors just get the shaft when it comes to insurance.
