Personal Cloud and Server OS/Software/iOS/Android

I am looking for suggestions for what operating system (linux/server or windows/server) to run a home file server, cloud storage to be used with iOS devices and android devices. And programs for the syncing of mobile devices.

Has anyone do anything like this? My upload speed is crap at this point but looking to get into this and upload speeds should improve.

Generally speaking it's hard to go wrong with Windows Home Server 2011. However I can't really speak for mobile syncing.

If you google 'personal cloud' you find alot of programs for both windows and linux. As well as some distros for cloud.

Was hoping someone all ready knew the best solutions.

It's such a vague question that it's difficult to answer. Do you want ActiveSync for personal email? Do you want an app like Dropbox to sync files between your PCs and mobile devices? The cloud really just means a server that's always available, if you're building your own you need to decide what services it provides and how.
