So me and my fiance live on the 2nd floor of a 3 floor apartment building, and the girl above us for some reason sets her alarm for 3 am, lets it go off for 10 minutes, turns it off, then repeats the process every morning for about 3 hours, til around 6. She doesn't get up and moving til then, is it reasonable for me to either say something to her, leave a note in her mailbox asking her to be a little more considerate, or does this get chalked up to "its an apartment, deal with the noise"?

I don't have a problem with any noise during the day, but don't you think it's a little ridiculous for it to go off for 3 hours before getting up? EVERY DAY?

I typed this up, and was going to put it in her mailbox. What do you think?

Kylei,

Please do something about your alarm clock. Every morning for 3 and a half hours or so(from 3-630 it seems), we hear your alarm go off every 20 minutes it seems. It is incredibly loud, and goes off for at least 5 to 10 minutes at a time before you decide to turn it off. We can't get any sleep at all anymore. I don't know if you aren't hearing it, or why you have it go off for 3 hours every morning before you get up, but it is very difficult for us to sleep at all with it constantly going off. What you do is your business, but please be considerate of the other people in the building, 3 hours of laying awake listening to someone else's alarm clock every day isn't reasonable at all. It's no different than having loud music on at night.

Thanks.

thats fine. Next step is to talk to the landlord.

I just had that problem except the guys alarm was his ipod + dock at full blast and it went off for 12 hrs at a time since he always left for the day before turning it off.

Yup. Landlords generally do not take kindly to tenants who cause problems for other tenants. They may well refuse to renew her lease if you're not the only one complaining.

I think that's a very reasonable letter. If you don't get results, go to the landlord. If you still don't get results, throw her out her window.

My new apartment complex has cards that you can give to other tenants when they annoy you. If you get three cards against you, you're out.

As a single guy in the two-bedroom "Family" block of apartments, I'm just waiting for their kids to make any sort of noise. Bwahahahahaha!

You're doing the right thing though. That way she can fix it without having a complaint on her record. It's hard to tell how much noise is too much in an apartment.

Unfortunately, I had to call the cops. It was 2AM in the morning. I really like the guy as he is the "fix-it" dude of the complex, but I needed to get to sleep. The cops couldnt do anything because he didnt answer his door. I thought perhaps he had fallen ill or something inside his apt because he was being unresponsive.

1 hr later, I hear footsteps through my ceiling and I promptly ran upstairs to have a chit-chat. He was totally unaware of all the noise and was extremely apologetic. I now have his cell-phone number if this happens again -- which it hasnt for the past week. This used to happen twice a week.

All of the noise offenses occured because he left for the day to do some work out of state.

Thanks everyone. I don't want to be the complaining neighbor but I can only take so many sleepless nights.

Why don't you just ask her nicely in person first? She really may not be aware of it, and might feel bad if she finds out, thus she'll work with you. The letter just seems like too much as afirst step.

If you do send the letter I'd make it less personal, and have it read:

Kylei,

Every morning for 3 and a half hours or so (from 3-630), we hear your alarm go off every 20 minutes. It is incredibly loud, and goes off for at least 5 to 10 minutes at a time. We are losing a lot of sleep as a result.

Thanks.

You called the cops before you talked to him? For ipod noise? Anal tenants are 100x worse than some loud music.

RTFT. The guy had his iPod set up as him alarm, and it was going off for 12h/day at full blast.

Also, I'm surprised no one's asked, so

:camera:s? :p :D

I'd put "Please do something about your alarm clock." last to sound less rude.
I'd talk to management, too

Definitely talk to her before going to the landlord. I got a call from my landlord about a month ago saying that we got a noise complaint from a neighbor, with no more information. I feel bad about disturbing neighbors and wish that that person would have come and talked to me so we could resolve the situation. I don't know which neighbor it was, and I don't have any information about when it occurred, because the landlord didn't know, and wouldn't tell me who complained. I'm a college student living in an apartment complex that is mainly occupied by families, so I realize the need to be respectful to the neighbors. (The reason I live here is because I hate loud stereotypical "college" apartments) It kinda irks me to think that one of my neighbors could have the opinion that I'm a typical loud, drunken, jerky college student...

No way. You live in an apartment, you have to understand that you can't be loud. That's one reason that I'm glad that I don't live in a singles apartment. Families are generally less annoying than idiot college kids.

I haven't seen her once in the last 2 months to even say anything. She works and goes to school. The only time I even know she's up there is when that stupid alarm is going off.

Talk to the landlord. Get her phone number and call her to tell her to turn off the alarm clock when it's going off. Pound on your ceiling to get her up. Pound on her door when it's happening.

All kinds of things to do.
