Though I am certain Russia would be more than happy to host the servers and protect it for them.

Voat just proved what you likely already suspected about these self-proclaimed "free speech" sites. If you refuse to moderate toxic behavior on a social site, it simply becomes a haven for the toxic people who get kicked off larger sites... and advertisers won't touch it with the proverbial 10-foot pole.

If you want to have a healthy community, you need to moderate content in a way that makes well-adjusted people feel welcome. And that means kicking out the racists and conspiracy peddlers.
