perpendicular magnetic recording

I did some googling and it sounds like we may see desktop harddrives using this tech later this year.(Seagate sounds like there ahead of the game on this).

Will these new drives be faster than the "old" style or just more storage for cheaper?

Anyone hear any firmer timeframes than just "this year sometime"?

Assuming they are able to develop heads with the ability to read the much smaller PMR magnetic domains at the same inches/second rate as the current heads read the much larger horizontal domains, then the sequential read/write rate could be a lot faster, while locating random data will probably be a bit slower initially (the mechanical precision and speed of the head locating assembly being much harder to improve on than the areal density of the media).
