permissions / read only screwed up in win7

win7 pro x64 on new SSD, two data drives for stoarage, both of which were in use on my previous XPx64 setup. My user account in both cases was an administrator

I've got a folder of flac files with tags that need fixing, but I can't edit the tags of any files I have edited previously on my old computer. I get "access denied" errors

I go into folder properties and uncheck "read only", hit apply, and close the dialog. if I open it again, read only is back to being solid blue (but not checked)

I've googled till my fingers were blue, taken ownership, edited permissions...nothing changes the fact that I can't edit these damn files. seems like lots of people are having this problem, but I'm the only one who can't fix it by taking ownership.

I can copy them to my desktop, make the changes, and the copy back, overwriting the original, but that's frustrating and would be TBs of unnecessary copy - rewrites

anyone have this problem? very frustrated.

Have you taken ownership of your external drives as a whole rather than individual files and folders? One you have taken ownership of the root and apply changes to child folders then you should be good to go.

This problem does sound like it stems from ownership as the files will be marked with your old system's administrator SID. There was a tool for Vista called take ownership, so there should be one for W7.

I've tried taking ownership of the whole drive, both as my own user name and as all administrators. Nada. I shouldn't need to restart after taking ownership, right?

if I go into permissions I see that full control is enabled for all user names except one called "CREATOR OWNER." if I try to enable full control for that user name, it runs through most of the folders till it gets to the one I'm having problems with, and then throws an "access denied" error.

it almost seems like it's specific to files/folders my tag editor (MP3tag) changed on my last setup.

When running W7, the owner of some non-OS volumes/folders is just a SID string (presumably the administrator account from XP). I came across some info about "revoking" this with SubInACL and now "taking ownership". What would the owner be if "revoked"? And if just "taking ownership" then does not the unwanted owner remain?

How do any changes affect running XP again? If the owner should be changed then should it be to Administrators or a user which is described as an Administrator?
