OK, say you have a directory on a network drive. There is a folder two levels down to which you need to grant some people access (edit rights), but they don't need to edit rights to any of the files above that folder. What is the most efficient (quickest) way to set this up so that the users can still browse down to that folder and edit the files there, but can't access any other folders in the levels above?

Give them list permissions at the top level. Leave default inheritance in place and it will roll down.

Then drill to the folder you want and grant the permissions you want. Defaults will push that to subfolders of the subfolder. If this is not desired, goto the advanced button to change the inheritance.

If you are sharing this out over the network, you can skip the first part and just create the share directly at the point where you want access.

As stated above kind of, you give permissions to the directory that you want, then click the advanced button and uncheck the option on the bottom that says something like, inheriate from parent directories - it's the 1st of the 2 check boxes on the bottom.

If they should only have read access to be able to traverse to a subfolder where they have higher rights, give them the default read permissions (read/list/execute), go to Advanced, click on their user or group entry, and then where it says "This folder, subfolders, and files", change to "This folder only".
