Permanent Red X over internet connection indicator...

My internet works fine but my computer doesn't seem to think so. When I place the pointer over the two little computer icons it claims:

Connection Status: Unknown
No such interface supported

I also hit the Diagnose and Repair button and it claims "Windows did not find any problems with your internet connection." And another message I get says that it cannot connection to the DNS server.

Another problem that has arisen is that my Windows Media Center crashes after a few seconds of opening. With the error message:

CLR20r3
ehshell.exe

I am wondering if the two problems are related. And I can't remember if the red had appeared after I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. So I am not sure if that would be a player in this problem.

I am running Vista Ultimate x64.

Thank you for your time,

-Dan

P.S. Should I have put this in the Networking forum?

Are you using a Wireless connection and have either onboard LAN or a Network card?

Sorry, was gone for the weekend.

But I am using both wireless and onboard LAN. It doesn't matter which one I am using the connection box still has a red X over it.

And I don't think my computer is infected. Kaspersky has been installed since I did a clean install a few weeks ago.

Downloaded it and attempted to run it but I get this error message from their servers..

So I am assuming their servers are down. I ran a full scan with Kaspersky IS 8 and there was nothing detected.

Or could it be his firewall is set up in such a way that it is blocking activex controls from being installed. A firewall set too tightly could explain all the problems you are having. Have a look at it.

Alright the site finally started working. I ran a "complete scan" and it claimed that it did not detect anything.

I have tried System Restore points from two different times that I think were before the red X appeared and both times the restore point has failed to load. Claiming that there was an unspecified error that occured.

Also when I create other profiles and attempt to open Internet Explorer, the IE window comes up and then quickly closes. And it appears that other programs will not connect to the internet.

I really don't want to have to re-format, I just did it a month ago.

I am about as updated as can be!

I am finding a lot of people having the same problem on different forums. And it appears their post goes un answered or they aren't able to find a fix for it.

When I select the Diagnose option under Local Area Connection i get the message..

Cannot communicate with DNS server(66.214.48.27)
Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.

Not sure what I can do to repair this...
