I've got a tbird 800 which is right now just running on a generic hsf with the paste that came with it. I ordered some higher quality stuff which is in transit, but it the mean-time something strange happened. My cpu temp normally hovered around 32 degrees, and would go up to 50 after playing a 3D game for a while, but suddenly today the temp soared to 57 while just in windows d/ling some stuff. I was wondering if it's possible that an occational oil change is neccessary. I am also unsure of exately how to apply the heatsink paste. Do i just put it on the core, or on the whole top of the cpu?? thanks in advance for the insight.

You just need to smear the heat paste over the die/core. A 1mm thick layer is recommended.

AMD says not to use heat paste becuase of pump out concerns. I have a Thunderbird 750 and a Duron 650. The Duron uses a thermal pad and the T/bird uses paste - Tunderbird runs cooler.
