But in essays I use period. space space.

I always just use one. Using two spaces comes back from the typewriter and early computer days when the width of each characters was the same.

Period-space-space is so old fashioned. It's what I was taught in typing back in 8th grade, but it seems antiquated now. I don't think it improves readability or anything and it can cause some formatting problems (like in email set to wrap at a certain number of characters you can end up with a line indented by one space for no reason).
