The Final Word
Well, if it sounded like we were swooning throughout this article, it's because we were. MSI's GeForceFX 5900XT card left us with the undeniable feeling of "Wow, this is how a mid-range card should be done". While we were pleased to see nVidia's mid-range performance improve with the introduction 5700 Ultra series months ago, the 5900XT simply outshines the 5700 Ultra on every level. In modern games, there really isn't even that large of a performance gap between the 5900XT and their high-end 5950 Ultra products - even with high-end visual quality settings enabled.

News flash: the Earth is round! ;)

Still, 9600XTs go for $155, and 5900XTs for $185. There's some difference, though not much. That MSI 5900XT is impressive, though, considering its cooling and bundle: quality.

Edit: I meant "some difference" in price, not performance. Obviously the 5900 outperforms the 9600, what with ~double the fillrate and bandwidth.

199$ of BBA at compUSSR

214$@newegg.com form sapphire and 229$ for retail

Remember,
radeon 9800is the main versino and 9600 the scaled down. The fx 5900 is the better version fx 5700 the scaled down.

fx 5700 has more processing power than radeon 9600.

fx 5900is a highend graphic card.

You can't always compare a geofrce 2 to geforce 4 ,especially when you're plaing far cry etc

Additionally suprising, it flattens mid-range products using NV chips as well! Imagine that! Actually, the 5900xt is a good value at its pricepoint as compared to any mainstream card.

With 9600XT you get Halflife 2 and good midrange performance.

At around $200 mark the 9800pro owns the 5900XT.

Nvidia's little naming fraud wont work on anyone with a brain.

On the other hand it ruins many of Nvidia's own products, and kills their margins and profits, nice tradeoff huh?

The 5900XT is a high-end card. Middle-end cards with 128bit memory are another story.
The 5900XT is a very good card in Europe because in most countries you can't get a 9800pro under 300-400$ here.
In the US, you can get some video cards for a lot less, the situation is different.

aren't ranges defined by price?

it's like saying that a GF4MX is a high end card, a GF2MX is a mid-range card, and a GF1 is a low-range card.

it's all by price, dawg. $350-$500 is high end, $225-$350 is lower-high end, $175-$225 is upper mid-range, $125-$175 is mid-range, and everything else is 'lower end'.

that's why the 9800XT and 5950U are high-end.

well, in the first place, it doesn't "own" the 5900xt, and second of all, it's $212 for the barebones OEM saph 9800pro; $225 for the saph retail. while overall the 9800p is a better card than the 5900xt imo, it's a tossup on what's the better value. some ppl may consider the extra cost for 9800pro worth it, some may not. at the same price i'd definately take the 9800pro.

as far as fraud? no more so than any other naming convention that's been used by someone else. ATI certainly wasn't the first to use "SE", "LE", etc. are they frauds also?

5900XT needs to be compared with 9700 Pro. Both are similar in price and performance. Same w/ 9600XT and 5700 Ultra. I would take the Radeon in both cases.
