Performance wise, is 256mb of vram holding me back?

I just noticed this the other day playing some of the newer games.

Like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, whenever I crank up the GFX setting (or w/e it's called) to high, the game becomes sort of a slideshow at some points.

And in other games like FakeFactory's Cinematic Mod (Text) the game does slightly slow down sometimes (like in an outside open environment).

Do I just need to except the fact that my cards in SLI just can't handle the newer games at max settings?
Is there anything I can do besides turning down the settings? (to save vram?, if thats the problem?)
And I'm talking about rig in sig.

OR....
May be I should just buy a 8800GTX. It'll rape my cards. :)

I've noticed with that game that the GFX Detail setting will reset itself to Medium anyway, even if you move it to High. Just leave it at Medium and set the texture quality down a notch. There is literally no difference that I can tell just from looking at it in game and the frames are soooooo much better.

Don't worry about the 256 MB thing, I have the same problem on my 512MB X1900XT. If anything it might just be system memory and the crazy textures.

Although, yeah, an 8800GTX would rape your cards (and mine).
