in these days i feel like a laptop might be more useful. being a lower grade gamer, i still would prolly play games (not much more than battlefield 2 etc) on my 22" (plugged into the laptop). what kind of a step down would i be looking at coming offa 7900GS in sli?

hm. the most painful lookin spec there is the 128-bit memory bus

Which isn't even that bad, especially considering that we're talking about a mobile part. Try comparing 3DMark scores between your current setup and different mobile cards, see if you can find something acceptable in your price range

I have a laptop with an HD2600. It fairs well in everything I've thrown at it. It will definitely be a step down from your desktop. So I would say if you can keep your desktop for gaming do that, and buy a laptop with an integrated GPU. Also with an HD2600, don't plan on playing anything above 1280x800.

You can browse on over to www.notebookreview.com and find heaps of discussions about mobile gpu's and their graphical prowess as well as overclocking abilities.

so not enough to run battlefield 2 on at 1680x1050 then

what about compared to just one 7900GS?

I've run BF2 at 1680x1050 on an X1600. I think I had to turn down some settings but it worked fine. I believe the HD2600 is twice as powerful.

Remember, your desktop is probably getting a consistent 100fps... Mine does with a 7950GX2, and it even did when I had a 2560x1600 monitor.

on a X1600? that's impressive. i would like to see some of these latest video card development translate into some decent mobile graphics cards.
