I'm considering getting the WD6400AAKS and just about ready to pull the trigger.
Regarding the future larger WD drives using the same platter type (334GB) except with a quantity of more than two to raise the capacity to 1TB and 1.3TB... assuming all things are the same except the number of platters, should there be any performance differences between the 640GB and the larger future drives?

As with WD latest offering, I expect you will see a trend start to develop resulting in smaller drives, 2.5" vice 2.5". The rotational weight of the disks is what causes so much heat and this is what wears out. With smaller platters there is less "mass" to spin, resulting in cooler operation and lower watted consumption....that's not what you asked though.

No, I don't think you will see a 4 platter 1.2TB Disk from WD, a 900MB 3 platter maybe.

There was mention of the larger sizes back in March I believe. I went ahead and ordered the drive. I guess there is really no point in playing the waiting game when the WD640 is such a great drive.

I think this year will be an interresting year for new hard drive offerings.

Thank you Tweakin for the reply.

Well, since we are dreaming ;) I'll take that 5ns 1 Petabyte 3-d holographic memory cube :D

I hear it really quite and doesn't use a lot of power.

Glossy or matt finish?
