Performance of Brand Name vs. Generic RAM

Anybody got a link to some benchmarks showing the performance difference between say some Generic PC100 RAM and the highest quality PC133 RAM?

I'm running Win98 on a Duron 600@950 in a AbitAV7. I'm wondering if my money would be better spent on 2 Generic 128MB PC100 DIMMs or a single Quality 128MB PC133 DIMM?

thanks!

I've got no benches. But the widely accepted truth is, if you plan on oc'n... pay a little more for the brand names. You can always get an exceptional stick of generic once in a while, but you rarely get a bad stick of a good brand. And if you do, it's lifetime guaranteed.

RAM either works or it doesn't. The problem with generic ram is that sometimes it does not function as advertised. For example, lets say that you want to run your ram at CL2 @ 100 mhz. You set the bios to reflect your choice and you reboot. Now, either your system works or it crashes. All ram that will run at your choosen settings will function the same. The nice thing about brand name RAM is that you have a better chance that your RAM will function up to it's rated speed.

Well I AM overclocking, but by changing the multiplier... which the quality and the speed of the RAM does not affect (at least to my knowledge)

wow 3 posts at the same time 🙂

Modus: thats what I'm asking about. Does anyone have any benchmarks showing the performance gains between cas2 and 3 and other performance changing ram settings

At equal speeds and CAS latencies, brand name RAM is no faster than generic RAM. The difference is, name brand RAM may allow you to reach those higher speeds and lower latencies.

RAM is RAM...it's just the uncertainty that comes with Generics.

My roommates got some 7ns CAS2 Generic...it's awesome..it runs at like 148Mhz CAS2 no problems. And he paid 2/3s what I paid for my micron PC100 CAS2

You just cant' tell what you're getting with generics.

Superfreeky,

The thing is that you WILL get better performance by overclocking using the multiplier AND the fsb/memory bus.

For Example:

10 x 100 = 1000 mhz

9.5 x 107 = 1016 mhz

If you had good quality ram and were set to hostclk+pci clk which is the name of the setting in most AMD KT133 mobo's(133 mhz memory bus) then upped the bus to 107, your ram would be running at 140mhz.
Running good quality memory at that speed plus having cas2, 4 way interleaving, etc you would get MUCH improved performance.

As to your question of how much better performance? Well I don't have any benchmarks with me right now. You could check out the review linked in one of the posts above, that would at least give you a place to start. I think if you compared an Athlon/Duron with say Mushkin Rev1.5 memory that can run 140mhz cas2 easily to one with generic pc100 cas3 the difference would be fairly evident. I would guess at least 10fps in some games.

Hellraven: yes! those are the settings I'm talking about, perhaps I should have been more clean in my original post. Why aren't there many benchmarks showing these gains, if there as substantial as most say!?

Here is my Sandra Memory Benchmark running Mosel Vitelic PC133 at 144MHz CAS2 turbo in my KT7. I'll try to run another at CAS3 Turbo and post the results for you later.

EDIT: Here is the Sandra Memory Benchmark at 144MHz CAS3 turbo. Both benchmarks were conducted the same way with a fresh reboot, and all running programs closed except Sys Tray and Explorer.

Now perhaps someone will post a couple of benchmarks for you with generic RAM so you could compare. I personally do not buy generic, so I do not have any around to benchmark for you.

KT7
$99 128 Apacer 133 w/Infineon
$79 128 Mushkin Budget 133 w/Micron - semi generic
142 cas2 everything maxed
My best was 532/620
