Performance increase?

Just curious if 2 gigs of RAM instead of my current 1 gig (DDR400 Dual channel) would make much of a difference in games like Doom3.

test it out and report back your findings ;):)
<--someone who dropped from 1.5 back 1 due to no noticeable performance benefit for tasks as done by this user...
as always..ymmv

Only games i have went remotely close, or over a gig was :

Doom 3
Sim City 4
C&C Generals for some reason..

Doom3 peaked at 1105 i believe..

:D

I would say no, save your money for a more worthy upgrade..

Try this

After you have finished playing the game and are back at the desktop press ctrl-alt-del and select the 'Performance' tab. Is the Peak Commit Charge >1GB? I have never seen any game go over 1GB yet.

Its known that more ram will result in application performance in equality to running more apps with a noticeably better performance.

If you rig was at 256 meg for 6 months, then you insantly dropped in 2 gigs = you'll notice a difference.

windows = the preemptive multitasker should like the more ram, but going from 1 to 2 gigs? im not to sure if you'll notice a difference.

Only time you will notice performance increase is when you are using more memory then you have ram.
In those cases Windows will move the data on to your HD from RAM. Then if you need that data it has to bring it back in to RAM, which takes more time then if it was in the RAM already.
In some cases going with more memory can actually cause decrease in performance. With more memory it has to go through more stuff to find the correct data.
Example. You are loading a map and have 512 MB of of RAM with 300 MB free. The map is 400 MB. So in order to load the whole map in to RAM it has to store 100 MB on to HD. This slows down the loading of the map. First because it has to move the data from memory to HD. Second that it has to wait for the write operation to finish, before it can resume the read operation from HD.

I'm upgrading a friend's mom's PC from 64mb (PC66), to 320mb (PC66). She's running Windows 98.
She WILL notice the difference... correct? :)

She really only cares about playing Hoyle card games. So I couldn't bring myself to try and push her up to an Athlon or P3. Her P2-333 is more than enough for her right now.

sim city 4 and CC generals have the excuse of poorly written electronic arts code.

She will be cranking out those cries of "Blackjack!" now. No more waiting 30 seconds for the computer to deal. :D

Do what klah sez.

Memory capacity does not increase performance but rather prevents performance loss as there is either 'nuff to avoid paging or there ain't.
