Performance Gained?

How much of a gaming performance difference would I notice if I made a new system with these specs, versus my current system.

New one: Athlon XP 2500+, 512 mb pc2700, ABIT NF7-S mobo (agp8x), geforce fx 5700u
Current one: P4 1.8 GHz A, 640 mb pc2100, Intel mobo (agp4x), geforce fx 5700u

In terms of graphics performance/overall gaming performance, how much of a gain would I see? I mainly play games like HALO, Splinter Cell, Unreal Tourney, Call of Duty, yunno. I've been debating whether or not to do this for a long time, I just want some feedback before I go through with it.

Probably not a whole lot. It looks like you'll have the same vid card, less ram, and a marginally faster cpu (well, depending on apps). Anyway, I don't think that upgrade would be worth it. Probably better off just upgrading to the fastest P4 your mobo supports. On the other hand, if you got PC3200 and oc'd the barton, you would see substantial gains. You could just oc your cpu an video card and gain some performance that way until you can afford a more significant upgrade.

I own a Dell, so I can't OC, I cant upgrade the pc2100 to pc2700, and my mobo only supports P4 B processors as well, so if I just stay where I am, would that offer only a little less performance than an upgrade? I'm hesitant to upgrade because I know it would be a lot of hassle to switch OS's on my home pcs, swap hds, build the system, but I don't want to miss a good opporitunity.

A larger Athlon? haha and oh yea, I don't have a northwood either, lol its a willamette, although I don't know why.

I mean a larger upgrade 😛

I thought it might be a northwood since in your original post you have "P4 1.8 GHz A" though I recalled you previously saying you had a willy. Going from a p4 willamette to a 2500+ would be much larger of an upgrade though, as opposed to starting with a northwood.

I don't think I would bother yet. Wait till something like a 4GHz comes out, then go for the ball.

whens that supposed to be? "edit" well let me just give you a detailed recap of my situation. My mother needs a new computer to work at home for her job during the summer, and what she has now just isn't going to cut it. I have offered to give her my Dell Dimension 4500, and she will buy me the parts off of newegg.com to make my own system as a replacement, provided I keep the costs down (under 450), She needs this computer by summer, so if I wait, what options will I have then, as opposed to now?

your cpu will make reasonalble diff. in games like ut2004,doom3.

for norm use the diff. will be useless for money and just under 1-5%.

for games you are playing they will be about 5-10%at max due to mainly more cpu power.

cheapest way😱c cpu.

Wait as long as you can, then ask here again. Prices will always drop, and maybe you can afford an Athlon64 by then. Right now, you're a little over.

$225 Athlon64 3000+
$100 KT800 MB
$ 80 512MB PC3200
====
$405

Obviously, if you don't have a spare HD, CD-RW, or case around, you're not hitting $450. But I'd wait to see if you can come close in a few months, and maybe pitch in some of your own money to cover the difference.

BTW, Anandtech and AcesHardware have pretty thorough CPU reviews, in which they compare a range of setups in games. I'd check into reviews to see how your system will stack up against an XP2500+, and how an XP2500+ will compare to an A64 3000+. AT's P4-3.2GHz and 3.0GHz reviews include a ton of CPUs tested.

if he can play max payne 2 at 1024*768,almost max setts and very little aa and af and play doom3 at a little high settings then good enough,wait.

what will be the decrease in price of sapphire radeon 9800pro 128mb at newegg.com from 215$ in the next 3 months

Yea, I totally agree with you pete, you're right, prices will always drop, and I just played Unreal 2004 on my system today, and I can max pretty much everything I need out with no hiccups, so I guess HALO was my reason for downing on my system, and now that I think about it, even people with 9700 pros can't max out HALO. You're absolutely right, an Athlon 64 would be a bit more futureproof.
