perform a clean Leopard install using the upgrade DVD

i want to do a clean install cause tiger and leopard together take up 20gb of space....

can someone confirm this works ?

To perform a fresh / clean installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to a totally blank/formatted hard drive using nothing but the upgrade DVD, do the following:

1. Boot from the Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD (hold 'c' while booting).
2. Notice that the check for previous will fail (and "Continue" button is grayed out).
3. Choose the option of restoring from a Time Machine backup and go as far as you can (note: if you do actually have a Time Machine backup, pretend that you don't - making sure you've already removed any backup drives you may have plugged in).
4. Now go back to (almost) the initial screen.
5. Notice the "Continue" button is no longer grayed out...
6. Install Leopard while drinking a beer.

Yes, this works. I did that with my iMac when I first got it home. Just booted up with the Leopard disc and then did a Format/Clean Install on my main drive. It just runs better that way, for me at least.

Kaido, i saw that too, i would of done that but i dont have 8gb dvd's plus it seems a little time consuming, why go through all that when you can just use the method above.

I dont understand why apple wont let me do a clean install.

My drop-in disc worked fine for installing a clean version of Leopard. I don't really understand the confusion with this. You boot from the DVD and then choose to do a Clean Install, where it formats the drive and installs the OS. Not really rocket science.

LOL apparently it is rocket science for u, theres full install cd's and theres upgrade only CD's my macbook came with a upgrade cd, so im trying to do a clean install with an upgrade cd and according to the link i posted above its possible.

its a good thing u posted that last message cause i thought u were confirming that it works and i almost deleted my partition.

That's my point, is it did work for me. I received my computer from Apple, put in the upgrade disc and BOOTED FROM IT, and then chose a CLEAN INSTALL via FORMAT method.

It worked beautifully and I had a freshly formatted install of Leopard. Obviously something is getting lost in translation here, so I'm done with this thread.

If its an upgrade cd u should be able to only upgrade, unless u used the method above

When I started the upgrade it said I couldn't install because I needed 10.4 and the continue button was grayed out. Then I went to the time machine and there was nothing listed, so i closed it. Now the continue button was no longer grayed out and I'm 49% done with the installation right now.

I know it doesn't make any sense but it worked
