Perfect Government - Protected Rights

Obviously people are going to have different view on what government should and should not do, but it seems to me that the general role of government can be summed up as protecting the rights of those it governs. That would mean all crimes are essentially infringements upon other's rights. For example, the crime of homicide is infringing the victim's right to live.

The disagreement comes from what rights it should protect. Some people might think everybody being alive is good enough, while others might want property protected, a right to health (and medical care, food, clothing, shelter, etc should be provided by the government), and many other protected rights.

Some rights, such as the right to live, are easy to understand: we(meaning people in general) want to live, so we want somebody (the government) to make sure we can keep living and do not want others to stop us from living.

Other rights might have more complex justifications that some people will disagree with.

I'm interested in hearing what you consider rights important enough to be protected by the government and more importantly why you consider each of those rights important. Try to take no right as granted and explain as many as you have the patience to.

In a perfect world, you are right. But governments exist all over the world that really don't concern themselves with the rights of the people that allow them to stay in power.

Shows how much I read ATOT, didn't even notice the P&N board =-/
Should I post this again there?

Exactly! Where else would a perfect government exist? Though I would argue that most actual governments can be said to be only protecting rights (but it would take some pretty convulted rights =-)
