I used to do that at work with dry ice and a plastic water bottle. The first time i did that was awesome, i had the GM and other supervisor come out running to see what the hell it was.

I used to do that when I lived in FL. Everyone has a pool so Muriatic Acid is common. Throw in some aluminum foil and the gas produced will expand until the bottle bursts. Throw it in the sewer to magnify the sound.

We did the dry ice one's in college (1981). They work really fast if you add water.
