Hey,

I'm just wondering if anybody has any information or recommendations on a good, small sized pepper spray to be carried from day to day by a young women. Thanks

We need pics of you to see if you're hot enough to need to be worrying about being assaulted.

I dont know about pepper spray, but I just ordered a 100,000 volt pocket taser. I'm not sure if these things are legal in Maryland though....I should check that out.

I once read pepper spray was a bad idea, in a panic situation you a just a likely to spray yourself as you are to spray your attacker. With the added effect of wind you could end up taking some of the blast even when you do manage to use it effectively.

I would go with something else. Just my .02

I agree, when you spray it and a little bit of wind blows the fine mist of spray back into your face you're gonna be wishing you didn't spray it more than the attacker. The stuff hangs in the air just like air freshener and if you walk into the cloud you'll be gassed just as much as them lol, and that stuff isn't nice at all.

Thank you for that information! What I bought is a stun gun, something like this.

So, I can carry on me in Maryland, except for a handful of cities including Baltimore. I work in Baltimore....I might carry it anyways.

I'm not so worried about not having it in DC or Philadelphia though.

Typically OC "pepper" spray is not recommended for personal carry. If an incident occurs, you wont have time to access the spray buried in the bottom of your purse. If you do get it out, theres a chance that you wont know how to operate the canister due to lack of training.

OC is fairly easy to use, but if you've never used it before chances are that you wont incapacitate your attacker, infact if anything you'll just aggravate him more.

You run into all of the same issues with a pocket taser.

Police carry these tools along with an ASP and their sidearm to escalate force when dealing with bad guys. If someone is truly attacking you, your only real chance of self defense is either hand to hand or carry a pistol of your own. There are plenty of hand to hand self defense classes available as well as firearm training.

And no, I'm not talking out of my ass. I am a certified OC instructor.

And if you still get pepper spray, make sure you get a stream, not a fog which can be rendered useless by a light breeze outdoors. Also, you want to get a high scoleville rating, 2 million heat units is incapacitating, 500k is NOT. Percentage wont matter in a self defense scenario.

So why arent the stun guns useful...?

They can be useful, but hopefully your attacked isn't armed. A firearm is usually the only defense against an attacker with a firearm.

Against an unarmed attacker, a stun gun will work fine assuming that you've practiced getting it out quickly and operating it. Just tossing it in the bottom of a backpack or purse without ever practicing with it will not help at all. It also wont stop a determined attacker, just as OC wont.

Stun guns are used by police who typically are not facing armed suspects, but instead people who want to fight or run, and so are the obvious choice as opposed to a handgun.

Practicing with OC should include 1) aiming and spraying (buy an extra canister) and 2) direct exposure to the spray. Being exposed will familiarize the user with the effects and reduce the shock of accidental exposure.

They are contact-range weapons that rely entirely on pain for their effectiveness. OC (pepper spray) interferes with breathing and vision, batons cause blunt trauma and broken bones, and knives exsanguinate and can sever muscle and tendons. Tasers interfere with motor function, but only in projectile mode and only while the electric shock is applied. Furthermore, according to several self-defense enthusiast sites/forums (believe them if you wish), the sensation of the electric shock is more surprising than painful and can be fully accustomed to within several applications.

Hot Girls Tazered (NSFW, the title action is a couple minutes in)
I had to dig through the UCLA Taser thread to find the link, so I hope it's amusing.
