God, i don't know why i keep going back there. these guys are the absolute worst. never ever ever go to a pep boys.

so, i go to pep boys to have tires put on, my car has 170k miles on it so i don't want to spend a lot of money, get their cheapest tires, it's like 350.00 for the tires, installed.

3 days out of the shop, the tires are low on air, i figure, he put the air in at room temperature and winter really hit so, temps were down really really low, so, mb that's it.

i put air in the tires, 5 days later, they are really really low again.

today, i go to have my car inspected (in PA, that's done at most mechanic shops), the car passes inspection, but the mechanic says, there are leaks around the rims, he thinks the pep boys guys just didn't clean the rims before installing the tires.

i call the pep boys and they tell me, cleaning is normally an EXTRA CHARGE besides installing the tires. WTF kind of bullSHIAT is that?

fvcking retards, i'm never going back there again, the local guy says he'll take the tires off the rims and clean them and reinstall them for $20.00 / tire.

i'm thinking i'm better off having him doing it.

God i'm stupid for ever going to pep boys.

why confused? i am truly stupid for ever thinking pep boys can do a decent job.

although, installing tires should be one of the easier things to have done on a car.

The only thing I go to Pep Boys for is tires. They are the only place around here that has my size tire at an affordable price. I buy the 5 dollar warranty on them, so if they go low because they were not correctly installed they would have to repair it free of charge. But yeah, they suck and their wait time is insane. In the future I'll buy the tire from them and have someone else install it.

There is no way possible that cleaning the rims can be an extra charge.
They lied to you, you believed them (I wouldn't go back either) and got hosed.

EDIT
I am going to email a link to this thread to Pep Boys, corporate. Maybe the'll respond?

i was talking to them on the phone and he told me this BS, and i was so pissed off, i just hung up on him.

they wouldn't give me an appointment and then he gave me this BS about they wouldn't normally do this service for free because i wanted a refund on the labor and said i would take it elsewhere to have it remounted.

they are absolutely the worst customer service, i'm going to call back and ask to speak to the manager there.

I Agree, it's irresponsible to send a customer back on the road w/ leaking air. Even if
there was an extra fee involved they should have done it or contacted you before
mounting new tires and told you about the situation.

the thing is, I WAS waiting at the store while they did it, they could have told me THEN it was dirty, needed to be cleaned etc. None of that then they sent it out like that.

god, those guys really really suck.

That sucks dude. It could be worse though. They could have screwed you over the way Midas screwed me. I took my car in for a free brake inspection. They "forgot" to tighten some bolt on the caliper with the hopes that my brakes would fail in the parking lot, where the convenience of having brakes fail so close to a brake shop would mean they'd get my business. What they didn't count on was that I'd get out of the parking lot, down the road, and on to the freeway before the whole brake assembly on the left front wheel flew apart at 60 mph.

1. You should call the manager and tell them that you paid to have new tires put on.
2. You should explain that the new tires are low on air already.
3. You should tell them that the OLD tires did not have this problem.
4. You should claim that someone inspected your rims and that they believe pep boys damaged them
5. You should demand that pep boys fix it.

Don't call....take your car down there. Fussing with them over the phone doesn't get you anywhere. Get in their face.

Is it worth $80 of YOUR money to take this crap from them?

Honestly, you don't have to clean your rims when you put new tires on. They should have been clean enough because the old tires had a decent seal. The only thing they ever did when they put tires on my car was dope the new tires with that soap solution to help make a temporary seal while they initially inflate them. If all 4 tires are going down, they are either defective, have a slow leak around the stems, or are not the right size for your wheels. Or it could be the rim damage I was telling you about..... Either way, you paid for a service and at this point it shouldn't be your problem. Take it to them and be calm at first. Just explain that you're concerned the tires are defective....if they don't do anything, see the manager. Seriously. It's YOUR money.

ya, it's also my time. if i do that, i'll probably have to be in their shop for 2 to 3 hours minimum to get anything done and it won't get done unless i sit there the whole time, if i just leave it with them it could take days. i can't go days without a car, so now i have to get a rental.

when people fvck up like this, they know, it's not just the cost of the repairs, it's also the time involved.

i can take it to my local mechanic, i can schedule a time with them and it will be done in one hour.

Absolute crock of horse$hit man. . .I can't believe they tried to tell you cleaning the rim was extra. That is a REQUIRED part of routine tire installation. For them NOT to have done it is simple negligence on their part. Proper tire installation requires the rims be clean and free of debris so there won't be an air leak and as such it should have been a part of what you paid for originally. You should fvcking sue them for gross incompetence. You just don't put on new tires without making sure the rims are clean. . .it's part of the procedure. Unbelievable.

I don't see why the rims would need cleaning. I mean the seal between the tire and the wheel is air tight. Nothing should be able to get in between them. I've watch many other places mount tires and besides the soapy solution they used around the tire to make it slip on easier not one has ever cleaned the wheels before hand.

I'm speculating that there was probably a bad seal when that tire was mounted. Probably not their fault as that can happen with any shop. Go in and have them remount the tires on the wheels and have them check for air leaks in a tub of water. The wheels very likely does not need to be cleaned. If the leak was because they're dirty then isn't there a good chance the other 3 will leak as well?

I go to one of the many tire only chains around here, that's what they do all day long. I bought my tires off tirerack.com and had them mounted and installed for like $75. I don't even go to Pepboys for an oil change their mechnanics are such rookeys...

I wonder if they charge extra if your wheel has 5 lugs instead of 4??? Do you have a Walley Mart near by? Mine charges (now get this) $5.00 per tire to: remove old tire, mount new tire, balance and dispose of old tire. However if you need a new valve stem that will set you back another buck!

I thought they always put in a new valve stem? The place where I get my tires from always deflate the old tire by ripping out the stem lol.
