I'm gonna be building a new computer over xmas, and Ive been eyeing the 3800+ x2. Seems like a great processor. Should be good for me, as I typically have 5-6 apps open at once.

I have been hearing things about problems with the dual cores such as: games lagging, patches for windows, patches for software, patches for video cards (I dont even get this one). Here is an example of what Ive seen that is scaring me: Text

Is this a real problem that will affect me if I choose to upgrade to the x2? I dont want to spend money to have my computer lag or crash.

Here's the deal:

If you do a clean install and install the X2 driver you most likely won't have problems. If you do, then using runfirst or setting affinity manually fixes them.

Sigh. All you need is the updated X2 driver from AMD AMD driver

If you need the Microsoft patch then get that as well. I have a X2 4400+ at 2640 and it has no stuttering issues in games and is a monster multitasker and I only have the X2 driver. I have Cool N Quiet disabled in the bios. Do a search on these forums to see the FUD being passed around about AMD problems that were rather quickly resolved (more a scheduler issue than an AMD one).

Yep, like the others said, just do a clean install and install the X2 driver. I have had no problems, I haven't needed the microsoft hotfix with my X2. My pentium-d on the other hand has been nothing but trouble, and even the hotfix didn't fix everything. At least the temps are semi-reasonable now that it's water cooled, but still runs hotter than my overclocked X2 with the stock AMD cooler.

No problem. And if there is a problem, it's not a problem with AMD, as someone stated, it's a schedule problem, which means it's the OS. The amd X2 driver and the microsoft patch fixes these problems however.
