People with websites. Linking questions.. legality of it?

I have a sports related site and I am wondering what kind of laws are out there about linking directly to a site article with a snip of the article. I know a lot of people here have their own sites. What has your experience been with this?

For example, Wayne Gretzky whines about ref's and then a quote of his complaint and a direct link to the ESPN article. Are we allowed to do this? I see Hard OCP does it with the tech articles. Any help is appreciated..

As long as you list the source and give a link to it, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to...

I know in Europe, one of the countries there, I think made it illegal now becuase of 'stealing revenues'. But in the US, I believe it's ok, just don't post a full article.

Maybe I saw a news clipping for that Europe ban. I thought if the source was clearly named and the link clear it would be ok. I just wanted to hear others say it.
