I'm not sure if there is a problem here. You may have 512 mb of ram but because of all the processes running in the background most of these processes are running in memory. You are not going to have all of it avalble for you to use. alt ctrl del and got to processes this will show you what is using your memory if you want to stop a process right click on the process and click stop process tree. This won't work unless you click on the main process of the program you want to get rid of and it won't work if it is a process that xp uses to run.
I'm sorry if that is not your question but hey couldn't hurt.

i have the same problem in my other system. it has 384 but sys info only reports 256. it shows the right amount in both control panel systems page and task manager's performance tab. anybody figured that out yet?

I noteced the same thing before I reformated my HD and did a clean install of XP. (at first it was an upgrade from Windows 98 (BAD IDEA)) System Info now shows the correct memory size. Also before the clean install the ADD/REMOVE Programs was blank even though I had added new programs. Both work correctly now.

xp does the same thing with my cpu. it's a speedstep cpu so it can change speed, well parts of xp report it correctly (as does sandra) but other parts report it at the slower speed. fun times.
