quality depends on your TV I think, but since the xbox is a dvd player out of the factory, I think it's on par with what you'd expect with dvd players.

I use xbox media center personally, and since I have to use the controller to play my dvd's it's sorta a pain. I prefer using my dvd player with the remote.

yeah it depends on the file, if it looks bad on your computer it'll look bad on your xbox. I dont think a decent file will look bad unless you have a huge expensive tv or one that really brings out defects

Actually won't it look decent? Isn't the resolution of a tv much smaller than a resolution of a 19" monitor, or even 800x600? Isn't it in the 300s?

Some resolution facts

VHS Tape = 300 x 480 pixels

Standard TV = 460 x 480 pixels

DVD = 460 x 480 pixels (standard TV) (pan & scan)
or
700 x 480 pixel (widescreen) (letterbox)

HDTV = 1280 x 720 pixels (widescreen) (720i)
or
1920 x 1080 pixels (widescreen) (1080i)

it looks better than how it will look on your computer monitor.

Although one can still tell lower quality from higher q.

In my opinion, the video I get from my xbox is better than the video I get from the same TV using the TV-out from my 9700 Pro. I use Xbox Media Player.

you can play off the hard drive, or you can insert a data CD or DVD, and it accepts both UDF and ISO9660 discs.

I think the video quality from xbox media player is great.

IMO, SVCDs look better through the xbox than through my standalone DVD player, and being able to play divx, xvid, wmv, and mp3 is a great plus.

As said above though, the overall quality will depend on source video.

is there an xbox media player without modding your xbox?

all xbox media players are "unsigned code" meaning you need to have a modified xbox to run these programs. However, this doesn't mean your xbox requires physical modification. There are software exploits that can allow you to run a media player. I will not go into detail here, but for your questions Xbox, see http://www.xbox-scene.com
