People with IBM 75gxps that failed. What signs did you get before the drive died?

Did it make any odd noises or did your data get corrupted? Or did it just not work anymore? Thanks.

"Error reading from drive C:"

:)

I know, it's not funny. I couldn't afford a 75 GB drive then, but now I don't want it anyway..

My 30gb 75GXP made some funny grinding noises twice during 2 months. The noises would stop and the drive would work normally so I didn't pay any attention to it. It finally developed bad sectors one day and I had to do a low level format.

My 75GXP 30gb drive made some scratching sounds and I switched the computer off. When I restarted it a few minutes later it booted fine. I immediately backed up the drive and ran IBM's low level format utility - as suggested by IBM - and the drive has worked fine since the last month.

This is a replacement drive to another simllar drive which died in 5 days of purchase after making the exact same scratching sounds.

Mine made noises - not sure what kind, they weren't any listed on that IBM page - and then stopped later. I don't know what the problem was, but the drive has been working fine. Every couple of weeks I run the IBM diagnostics just to make sure everything is okay, and in a few weeks, I'm replacing the sucker just to be safe.

My drive sometimes makes a different noise sometimes when reading. I guess it could be described as scratchy. Should I be worried? If I rma'd it would ibm just send me another 30 gig 75gxp?

about 4 months ago I ordered 4 75gxp hard drives, 2 20gig 2 30 gig all were very quiet except one.that one was just loud than the others, I used their disk utility but it said it was good , no problems. Stll I didn't like the fact that only one was louder so I called IBM and RMA'd it no question from them. very fast turn around from ibm

Yes, they'll send you another 75GXP drive that has been refurbished.

From what I heard from an ibm tech support person the drives they send you are new. Have they stated they send out refurbed drives?

Mine made a slight scratchy whine right before it died. It would get stuck in the "Verifying DMI pool data" and never leave. I RMA'd it and I got sent back a refurb unit. Good turn-around and the HD-Tach scores seem in-line with a goood unit. It was a 45 GB and failed about 3 months ago

No warning what so ever. One day it worked, the next morning it would hang half way through booting.

Scandisk would hang.

Fdisk would hang.

Then my middle finger would hang.
