People camping out in the left lane, acting as a speed limit enforcing barier, force this kind of behavior.

How about people who use the middle lane (on a 3-lane road) as the slow lane? The road between home and work was recently widened from 2 to 6 lanes. I constantly find myself passing those who I will refer to as "middle laners" in the right or slow lane. The most important lane for good traffic flow on a 6 lane road is the middle lane ... but apparently here in Florida (we have the absolute BEST drivers in the world) the middle lane is the new right or slow lane.

I think the big issue here is what people are defining as "too slow". If I'm driving at 75 mph in a 60 (and people drive 60-65) and I get passed on the right by a car going 80 mph... yeah...

This. Also I always slow down to the speed limit in the left lane if some maniac comes up at a really high speed with his left directional on. I don't give a shit if he is in a hurry and my 10-15mph over the speed limit is too slow, he can pass me.

It doesn't matter if you're going over the limit, the left lane is for passing and the right lane is for cruising.

Now if the right lane is pretty full and you're passing people, you can stay in the left lane even if someone behind you wants to go even faster. Once the right lane clears up though, you should move over and let other people go past. Even if you think they're going too fast.

What bugs me is when someone is passing on the left and going like 0.3 mph faster than the person in the right lane and won't move over. Just friggin get past them, then move over.

This often makes sense if there is a lot of merging traffic. Left lane for passing, middle lane for cruising, right lane for merging.

Really, OP, you needed an explanation for this?

Well the explanations so far have been for the obvious case. Sometimes traffic is going fast on the left (everyone's doing 80+, giving each other space), and someone still insists on going 90 on the right. Waiting for that guy :)

People who speed in vans are funny too. How bout that gas mileage? :|

lol yeah--that's definitely annoying

I only have a problem with people passing on the right when they're obviously driving like a maniac (dangerously). I'm generally pretty good about not using the right lane except to pass and get over, though there's a few spots on the interstate that I have to travel all the time that are full of pot holes etc in the right lanes. Sorry, but there's no way I'm subjecting my car to all that at 75mph...so feel free to pass on the right in those situations.

"KEEP RIGHT UNLESS PASSING" <--- Simple and pretty much always works. If you can't follow this basic rule then please turn in your drivers license ASAP.

There is too much traffic here in Minnesota to adhere to the left is for passing only but if we could get out of the way for faster traffic no matter how fast they are going then life would be great. But a lot of people or people on cell phones have no clue they are slow and in the left lane. if there are 3 lanes the slow people use the middle lane so they do not have to merge and slow down with merging traffic but this causes more congestion since they should not be in the middle lane unless they keep up with traffic.

I do remember reading that cars that go under the speed of traffic are just as dangerous as cars speed faster than traffic.

If there are no cars around, sure you should use the left lane as the fast lane. If there are lots of cars around (which is true for 80% of the driving most people do), you don't really have a choice about which lane is the fast lane. The fast lane is whichever lane has the least cars.

A poll on this one would have been an epic 100% "Because of the slow people in the left lane".

If there is a car approaching from behind at a faster speed than you, if there are cars piled up behind you or cars are passing on your right, you are in a lane to far to the left.

Most people have no clue about this.

Also, when you hear a siren and see the emergency vehicle approaching, if safe to do so, PULL OVER and stop. Don't just stop in the middle of the road, you idiots!!!

I only do it if there's some douche in the normal "fast" lane driving slow. Otherwise I try to avoid doing it because there's always drivers who merge too slowly onto the right hand lanes on the freeway.

If I'm driving on the right of you and I pass you, then that just means you're driving slow and need to move.

If it's a 2 lane highway and you're on the left driving slow, I'll just drive next to you for the next 3 miles, while you back up traffic.

I still maintain the posted speed limit in the right lane. This is a challenge for some people.

That guy that passes on the right and squeezes in with inches to spare, working it like a NASCAR race? Making 6 lane changes to move ahead 75 yards?
I saw the scariest one of those a couple of years ago. This dude hammers it out of the center lane while I am in mid-merge into what was an empty right lane. He gets back over, cuts in front of me with about a foot to spare, then does the same with the semi in front of me. All the while he is talking to himself, a real psycho.
The scary part? He was driving an armored car!
The state patrol had him and another truck pulled over a few miles up the road. Presumably the trucker called him in..............D:

If you see a car approaching from the rear that is going much faster than you are it would be nice if you move over to the right.

A lot of Type D passive aggressives out there perceive the car in the rear view mirror as a challenge to their ego/manhood, and as such, deliberately stay put and perhaps even slow down.

did you ask the type d's about this? or did your type d passive aggressiveness give you this impression? :D
