First off just picking the thing up with bare hands and putting it back is rude enough....

update:
I am talking about say having bagels brought in for an office. You have a pile of 3 dozen on a few platters. There is someone that goes around, picks up a bagel...holds it right up to their face and gives a few big SNORTS....looks puzzled and then PUTS THE FUCKING BAGEL BACK INTO THE PILE.

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO SNORT IT?

/rant.

well... smell is a powerful sense, I wouldn't want to eat something that smelled bad.

It is a pet-peeve. Plus, I get annoyed when after they "sniff" it... they look up with a stupid... "ewwww" look on their face. I gues it comes down to rudeness.

My sister-in-law takes a quick sniff of her food before she takes a bite, and it find it very annoying.

That "rudeness" is a communal expression that is ingrained into our head to warn others "do not want, do not eat this".

Remember that humans/monkeys are highly reliant on the visual/facial expressions of others.

Does she do this with food she just prepared herself, or with food other people have prepared for her?

If you see that the thread was started by someone, its fairly easy to skip it if you don't want to read their stuff... :p

why does it have to be rude?

If its not a situation where you are a guest at someone's house or special event, I don't find it rude at all. But, I also despise political correctness, I think its the worst thing and is a major downfall of our society. All it does is slow progress.

Now mind you, I have a lot of manners and respect for individuals, but the concept of sniffing food and being disgusted, to me, is far from disrespectful or rude unless in the settings I briefly described.
As someone else stated, smell is a powerful sense. I sniff unfamiliar food, and even familiar food, all the time to judge whether its even worth my time tasting or eating. My nose has never been wrong. If I don't like the smell, I surely won't like how it tastes. Now sometimes a smell is a little confusing or makes me a little cautious, but if it smells downright bad, no way will I like it. I have tested that even, after others have urged me to ignore my nose.

I don't mind others being disgusted with food that doesn't smell right to them. If its at a buffet or a restaurant or a group outing or just a very casual event, I think its more respectful to display a little disgust, then to taste it and nearly gag or spit it out.

I can understand pet peeves, but I can't understand how it could be viewed as rude. ;)
Unless its your own personal cooking, or the cooking of a relative or friend. But even then, I respect the notion of people have their own personal taste preferences. This is probably because I have such a picky taste, so I'd know where one might come from. :)

It only strengthens the immune system of the next person to pick it up.
