Has anyone here replaced there old socket 939 heatsink with one of those Zalman Flower ones? If so, did you guys replace the old backplate to the motherboard with the one that came with the Zalman?

My MSI Board has the backplate stuck on. How should I go about removing it safely without damaging the motherboard?

Slide something thin that won't damage the board under it, like an old credit card and it should come off no problem. Heating it up with heat gun or hair dryer can help if it gives you trouble.

I was thinking of using a hair dryer. How long should I heat it for? It's okay if the mother board gets a little hot right?

Yeah, the motherboard can take a bit of heat, but don't go crazy. Just keep the hairdryer there long enough for the glue to melt away. If you don't want to mess with that, acetone (nail polish remover) will get the job done as well. Just keep some paper towels on hand ;)

I had a Zalman 7700Cu on an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI once.

I pryed off the stock metal backplane and replace it with the Zalman one. Notice the "pryed" word. :)

actually, I had an msi board once and tried to do the same thing, but it never worked. I ended up using the stock hsf.

I took the backplate off of my Epox when I installed my 7000A AlCu.

What did you try to do?

I did mine last weekend. The backplate came off with a little bit of persuasion. Nothing to sweat over. Now the temps don't go over 50C.

I did just what Zalman told me to do, I took a blowdryer to it. They said that 15 - 20 seconds should do the trick, but no go. I heated that thing up for a full two minutes and dug my blood donor card underneath it to no avail. I would suggest getting an xp-90; you don't have to remove the stock backplate and using a quiet fan will get you the same results. Try the Vantec Stealth 92mm.

For my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium I used a hairdryer to heat up the backplate. I don't think there's a risk of overheating it (unless your hairdryer is actually a flamethrower). I couldn't touch the backplate for a while after heating it for several minutes on the highest stand. When it was touchable again I was able to lift one corner with my fingers, applying moderate force. With a bit of patience I was able to lift the whole side, then I loosened the other side, and the whole thing popped off.

I'm a careful type, but I wasn't afraid of damaging anything at any time.

I installed the Zalman 7700AlCu without any problems on my Athlon 64 X2 4400+, and I don't think temperatures ever reached 50'C.

All right, thanks everyone for the help.

Did you guys aim the hair dryer right behind the backplate, or little bit at an angle?

So what did you guys do exactley?

FYI the hair dryer isn't required at all. I've done it twice no heat and once with a heat gun with just to see if it's easier. It helps but it's not required, I don't plan on using the heat gun next time round.
