i might sell my current desktop to buy a laptop. If this happens I will only have a laptop. Are there any drawbacks I should consider before doing this? I will however use a regular mouse/keyboard/and monitor whenver I use it at home. The slow laptop hd speeds kinda bothers me (5400 rpm).....

Well I have a couple laptops and a desktop and LOOOVVVVEEE my desktop. It's nice sitting back in my leather chair looking at my 22 inch monitor. Plus it's a lot faster. Why not tell us what your desktop setup is and what the laptop setup is.

desktop
850mhz amd thunderbird (no oc)
msi pro k7t 2a
geforce2mx 32mb sdram
10gig hd (i had a 40gig 7200 but it died recently)
sound blaster live value
19" samsung monitor
512 mb pc133 ram
8x ricoh burner

laptop:
HPackerd
2ghz p4
30gig 5400 rpm
dvd/cdrw combo
16mb video
512 ram
15" lcd display

I will be keeping the 19" monitor from my current desktop.
I dont play any games, and usually just go online and surf the net and talk on aim
i also do programming for school, so visual C++, visualcafe, and other software development programs will need to be installed

Recently my desktop's hd went out and im not completley sure what the problem is. Could've been just the hd, our the power supply, or the motherboard that caused it to crash. I lost alot of stuff and would not like to experience this sort of thing again. The laptop will be sold to me from my brother for $1000.

I bought a laptop when I was in a dorm, and when i first moved to an apartment because i didnt have room for anything else. It was nice for a while, but I am glad to have a desktop. It's nice to sit back and use the computer, instead of being up close all the time. Unless you want the portability, and don't play a ton of games, keep or upgrade your desktop.

You also probably aren't going to get much out of your desktop anyways. Desktop parts are so cheap, people figure they might as well buy new. You may find a sucker to pay a lot for your computer, but with nwe full computers selling for $299 you're not going to have much luck. I'd personally just get the laptop and keep both of them.

You should be just fine with a laptop if that's all you want to do. My father use one as his primary computer and he's happy. But remember what you're gving up, namyl pretty much all upgrade posiblitise, you won't for example be able to just buy a new HDD and stick it in when you're out of space. So if you decided to go with the laptop be sure that it has everything you want stragith out the box and then be prepared to buy a new one when this one gets old (as contrary to slowly upgrading a desktop part for part).

i only use a laptop now, seems fine. of course i hook it up to a 19" monitor, and a real keyboard etc. i got a vpr matrix so it has a 32mb radeon 7500. its basically for me, something that is a desktop with a slower hard drive (5400rpm 16mb cache 40 gb) that i can move around easily, and can be used without the monitor if needed. and has a built in uninterrupted power supply HA!

thhat and i'm a compsci major, i stopped o/cing probably over a year ago. O/Cing just became a stupid hobby as i had to second guess every error. It seems dumb especially with the fact that A. you really dont need more speed, and B. everything is so cheap anyways, and C. i make a lot more money now than i used to. that and games started really really sucking
