Can you see past the hood of your car sitting with your back touching the seat? I can with the Camry and Oldsmobile but not with my dad's van :(. I have to practice in the van too since i'm going to buy a SUV when I turn 16 :D

You'll develop a feel for the vehicle after you've driven it for a while. FFMCobalt drives a huge-ass Lincoln, & he's just as comfortable maneuvering it as I am with my Accord. He scares the hell out of me the way he gets into parking spots, but he never screws up.

As for your plans to get an SUV at 16, how do you plan on affording it? You'd better start planning & preparing now.

That was the same thing I was thinkin.

When I turned 16 all I thought of was what can I buy with the $500 in my wallet.

On top of the car you are going to have to think about insurance too. Big $$$ right there.

Heh yeah, and I drive a '92 Bonneville (I'm 16.)

You shouldn't be looking at the hood anyway, you're supposed to be looking to your horizon! :)

UT, can I call you UT? Okay... :) I'm just kiddin ya :p I just don't understand why anyone would want to drive an SUV unless they actually used it frequently for backwoods adventures ;)

You'd better work some serious hours, between saving for a SUV, paying for insurance, gas, etc, etc, etc. you'll be looking at probably an EASY $8,000 or $9,000 your first year. That's figuring on $5,000 for the truck, $150 a month insurance, $50 a month for gas, plus tires, maintenance, incidental repairs, etc. Owning a vehicle is NOT cheap. It sucks a lot of my income, & I can pretty much bet I'm making more than you will be.

Congrats if you can pull it off, but you gotta look at reality.

hehe, try maneuvering an airplane around other airplanes. (you steer with your feet)
its tricky at first because its hard to estimate the wing length with whatever your about to pull up against!

Of course, you work FT. I'm going to be working 3-6 after school and 10-4 on SAT. And throw a couple of on-site jobs in.

Sheesh, $50 a month for gas? That's probably an understatement for an SUV. I drive a '92 Accord to school and it costs me $20 a week :(

OK, then figure paying $300+ a month car payment, plus you'll have to have comprehensive insurance on a financed vehicle. You can probably figure $200 - $300 a month for insurance. Plus, being under 18 you'll need a cosigner on the loan & they'll probably want a decent sized down payment.

I tried shopping for car on payments at 18, with a job that I'd been at for almost a year, & with 15 months of steady employment. Virtually nobody would even consider financing me, the ones that would would have charged me 20%+ interest.

It's not fun.

Think through your income, don't forget a cool 28% or so to taxes, & figure if it's really worth it to you (if you can even do it).

As far as gas, I don't know how much he'd be driving... I spend $75 or so a month, but I'm driving 50+ miles a day to work.

(Most) Financing companies won't let your car payment exceed 1/5 - 1/4 or so of your gross income. On $13,000 you'd be making $400 payments, so you'd likely need an income of at least $1600/month for them to finance it in your name.

WHOA! My dad just told me even if I made XXXX dollars I still wouldn't be able to buy it since i'd be only 16. You have to be 18? So he would buy it like he was doing it for himself and I just give him money every month.
