People who design websites ...

Well I've been learning design on my own and I've made a few websites, and I now have 2 people who want me to make a website for them.

The first one is for a salon. I don't know much more than they want me to do it for them, but some local salons with websites are Hugo's Salon and Prive Salon, so I would assume it would be something comparable to that. How much should one charge for a job that is comparable to something like that?

The other one is not exactly designing a website from scratch, but more of an "upgrade" to their existing site. They want me to basically give them some type of interface where they have a way to upload pictures easily to specific galleries on their site. So how much would something like that go for in the industry?

If you have any rough ideas of what you would say they would go for in the industry, please let me know, thanks.

Considering everybody I know wanted me to do it for free...it's hard to judge.

Web design has become almost a cliche like job like a butlers job would be. Don't really need one but I could use one.

Both of those sites are terrible from a user standpoint. They look decent, but that's like putting a 486 in a really nice PC case, just cause it looks good, doesn't mean it works well. I didnt even know if the pages were loading.

welp as I said those are just local salons so I would assume they wanted something similar.

anyone have any estimates at all as to how much something like that or a little better would be a good price to charge someone?

A few pricing links from google:

http://www.marketme.com/design/design-pricing.php

I do a lot of web design work, but I charge hourly because I am usually doing other things like fixing computers, setting up email systems, etc. Part of the pricing depends on where you live, part of it depends on the size of the business, part of it depends on the complexity involved with the project. I charge hourly for my web design work. Don't forget to work yearly hosting into the price if you're sourcing a server for them.

$75 an hour for simple HTML+Graphics web design.
$100 an hour for anything more complicated than that (php/jsp/asp/database-driven/flash/ecommerce/ajax/etc..).

If you are more than 75 miles from a major population center, feel free to cut these numbers in half.

I agree that you should charge hourly... it's the only way that you'll get a fair amount. I'm not sure if I agree with the rates... I currently charge $50/hour and average 10-15 hours per website. I used to do per page, but when I did a website for some company, it turned out to be an amazing amount of work... I think I charged like $350 for 4 pages or something like that, and it turned out to be well over 40 hours.

If you are just learning on your own, find out what local professional shops are charging and charge a little less. Charge hourly but don't go crazy with the billed hours. The reason to charge hourly is to prevent scope creep where they just keep asking for tweaks and additional features. Theoretically you can tell them those will cost more but it's a strain on the business relationship even then. Don't be afraid to hire graphics professionals to do some graphics either.

Check out Craigslist and see what the local's are charging for web design.

from what i've seen people on craigs list are all on a 500 dollar budget and they want custom flash templates with shopping cart functionality , and then this that and the other thing on top of it. totally unrealistic cheap bastards.

Which is why I said cut the #'s in half if you're > 75 miles away from a major population center. Here's a hint. If you are still in Rockford, MI (based on your profile), you ARE > 75 miles from a major population center.

And yes, it does vary. I've seen people charge as low as $20 an hour for simple stuff, and as high as $30,000 for a 65 page static html website (which he got done in one week). It mostly depends on: where you are, how deep your client's pockets are, and how badly they need a website (or whatever service you are providing).
