People who blame people...

Yes, everybody is a victim now, but some breakthroughs in victimology are more noteworthy than others. The year's best example was the trio of supersize teens who sued McDonald's, claiming the burger chain made them fat by enticing them to eat its meals nearly every day for five years. Here are the best of the rest of 2002's social victims:

Ugly people are victims of the media. By featuring mostly beautiful people, TV and other media are causing eating disorders, psychological problems, and cosmetic surgery among the ugly, said Trond Andresen of the Norwegian Institute of Technology. He says the bias is similar to racism and suggests TV quotas for the facially impaired.

Robert Torricelli is a victim of hard-hearted America. The ethically challenged ex-senator from New Jersey acknowledged "mistakes" but blamed American culture. "When did we become such an unforgiving people?" he asked. "How did we become a society where a person can build credibility their entire life and have it questioned?"

Schoolchildren are victimized by the game of tag. Elementary school principal Pat Samarge of Santa Monica, Calif., says the game causes both emotional and physical injuries, particularly a loss of self-esteem, since not all children can win.

Rioters are victims of beer ads. Boisterous TV beer commercials may have spurred the recent wave of college riots, said alcohol-control specialist Henry Wechsler of Harvard. These ads, he said, threaten "the thin line between such beer-powered exuberance and the onset of rioting."

Model is victimized by his Winston ads. Raymond Leopard of Little Rock, Ark., is suing R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., saying that he experienced years of stress from appearing as the "Winston Man" in ads from 1978 to 1980. He said he didn't know at the time that tobacco was dangerous.

Australians are victimized by car ads. A possible ban on many car commercials, including one featuring a child saying "zoom, zoom" as a Mazda speeds by, is under debate by legislators in the Australian state of Victoria. The theory is that if cars are driven slowly in ads, or simply shown while parked, many accidents could be avoided.

Publicist Lizzie Grubman is a victim of the people she mowed down. When Grubman backed her father's Mercedes into a crowd outside a Hamptons nightclub, her lawyers said, the injuries were "caused in whole or in part by contributory negligence, comparative negligence and/or culpable conduct" of those she hit.

Barbra Streisand is betrayed by "a friend." "In the words of William Shakespeare," the singer said at a Democratic fundraiser, "beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into patriotic fervor." Turns out it wasn't the Bard, just an online copycat. The singer blamed "a friend" for her gaffe. No word on who was at fault for her Web site's fleeting ID of Saddam Hussein as the "Iranian" dictator.

A hockey player was severely victimized by not winning his league's
most-valuable-player award. Michael Croteau of New Brunswick, Canada, is suing for $300,000, claiming that his 16-year-old son was so crushed at not getting the trophy that he lost his love of hockey. The suit asks that the MVP award be removed from the winner and given to Croteau's son.

Somali warlord is victimized by the movie Black Hawk
Down. Though he hadn't yet seen the film, Osman Ali Otto said he was incensed at his portrayal and had thought of suing.

Schoolchildren are victimized by a word that sounds a bit like a racial slur but isn't. After Stephanie Bell, a fourth-grade teacher in Wilmington, N.C., used the word "niggardly" (stingy) in class, she was forced to apologize to parents, then counselors were dispatched to comfort her students.

Disabled people are victimized by Quasimodo. To avoid hurting the feelings of those with scoliosis and other disabilities, a British theater company changed the name of the play The Hunchback of Notre Dame to
The Bellringer of Notre Dame.

Californians are victimized by cue chalk and chocolate. Citing
California's 1986 law requiring warning labels on dangerous chemicals, creative lawyers are suing over the unlabeled toxic substances in electrical tape, lightbulbs, game darts, hammers, cue chalk, terrariums, Slim-Fast, and chocolate, which contains traces of lead.

A dead giraffe's privacy was threatened by prying reporters. When the Washington Post asked to see the National Zoo's medical records of a beloved giraffe after its death, the zoo said viewing the records "would violate the animal's right to privacy and be an intrusion into the zookeeper-animal relationship."

Your dog and cat are victims of Christians and Jews. Eccentric
Princeton bioethicist Peter Singer said the biblical message of mankind's
dominion over animals leads to "speciesism"?the wrongful conclusion that humans are more valuable than other creatures.

Atheists are victimized by believers. The National Secular Society of Britain complained that Colin Powell and President Bush have been disrespectful of atheism. A Colorado man wrote a letter to the Washington Times saying that atheists are targeted by vandals and falsely accused of conducting human sacrifices. "So many of us are in the closet," lamented one spokesman at the Godless Americans rally last month in Washington, D.C.

Good editorial. Blame anyone but yourself for your actions, and forget the fact that society is made up of ourselves.

I think it all stems back to the "The individual is smart, crowds are stupid". However, most people today are schemers. They know they are doing something wrong but when they're caught, they must justify their wrong doing. Instead of saying "I am insecure about myself" they have that superiority thinking and try to transfer blame to someone else.

Now-a-days, people think too highly of themselves. Many think that they are indestructible or they think ?who there are?. Manners and Courtesy are a thing of the past...

Death by public stoning would be too good for the attorneys who bring these frivolous lawsuits.

The cost of all of life's necessities is increased every time one of these assinine lawsuits gets the seal of approval by a jury of insipid morons.

"Death to them all, death to them all, I say. Let the righteous who take responsibililty for their actions rise up and smite the attorneys, the plaintiffs and, yea, even the subliterate juries who give credence to these moral atrocities!"

Amen Brother!
Next time I hear the slogan "Where there's blame, there's a claim" on TV I shall rise up and <Samuel L. Jackson> I shall smite them down with great vengeance! </Samuel L. Jackson>

summed up simply it's called accountability, i did it i'm responsible for it.

instead we turn it around, u did it so ur responsible for it.

easy to see how that happens basically we don't trust the other person to be accountable. it's basically the prisioners dilemma, if we all trusted each other we'd all be better off, but because none of us trusts each other we want to launch the pre emptive attack.

oh well, human nature, and every once in a while a revolutionary will come around remind us of our plight inspire us and we'll become more responsible and accountable for a short period of time before we descend into this morass of mistrust again. just the cyclical development of the human species.

You have forgotten the biggest group of blamers. Who are they? They are the cultural Taliban. These are the people, like those who have piled in here to say ditto to the rubbish listed in the primary post. Ahahahahaha. These are the blame the blamers. Yes, it's the perpetrators is all manner of social and moral iniquity that are the real victims, the blamers about being blamed. Yes, they are the people that life has passed by, the culturally backward, the dinosaurs whose morality, propounded in the Dark Ages has been shed like an old dinosaur skin by the advancing world. Listen to them whine and pine for the days when you could go out and be the worlds largest asshole and nobody said a word because the guy next door was just the same. Yup, the modern world has the property that where people are tightly packed, in the cities along the coasts, life is accelerating at a breathtaking pace, leaving millions of stogy old codgers grumbling in their primitive compounds across the heartland. Not a problem really. The mechanized farms will take out this trash eventually. In the mean time, blame the blamers; in the twilight of your age you blamers need a hobby.

Nice, moonie.... so when we blame the people who blame the blamers, we're all at fault, is that it?

Woohoo, we're gonna make a lotta progress that way!

There is no freedom without responsibility. Some people would greatly prefer to be a slave to Mammon, and the modern lawsuit culture is perfect for that. Money makes it all better. :disgust:

Sheesh people are lazy.

Very interesting list, I hadn't heard of most of those. Lizzie Grubman and the hockey kid are my personal favorites. :)

Eh, I have mixed feelings about that. It's one of those "where do you draw the line" type things, until we start getting unconstitutional.

Damn, Moonie, if I could ever understand you I might agree once in awhile. You need to remember that not all of us are philosophically inclined. Good teachers make things easy for the pupil to understand, they don't obfuscate the issue with vague analogies.

Just look at a Moonie post like cotton candy. It's big and fluffy and all of that but once you sink your teeth into it all you find are a lot of empty non-satisfying calories.

All fluff, no substance.

Morality = 0

The golden rule, seven heavenly virtures, or whatever moral codes we used to practice are not practiced much anymore.

IMO- this is the biggest problem in this country right now but will only change one person at a time from within. Not with any legislation.
