So I keep hearing these onstar commercials where someone get into a car accident or has chest pains in the car or some emergency stuff like that and they'd call onstar to explain to the operator who then calls 911 for them. Each time I hear one of these commercials, I'm thinking: WTF, wouldn't it be faster to just dial 911 in the first place?

Onstar calls automatically calls when the airbags are deployed.

Wait, so they can't afford a cell phone, eventhough 911 calls from cells are free, but they can afford 16.95+ for onstar?

Imagine being a customer service rep for on-star... the guy who's in charge of the Airbag calls.

At least your job wouldn't be boring haha.

Doesn't Onstar also connect directly to a satellite? If you are out of coverage range or can't get a signal on a cell phone Onstar will work.

onstar can function as a cell phone.

so why need both?

but hitting the emergency button on the onstar thing is about 2 numbers less, and probably 10 times safer to touch than finding a cell phone.

It also allows you to dial 911 with one touch of a button, rather than fumbling with a cell phone.

I don't think so, the fees for onstar sure wouldnt pay for a regular sat phone.

onstar connects to a satellite, it has national coverage....and the amount of users it has is growing so it cant cost GM that much (not sure if its profitable or not). and there is an emergency button right there.

I guess I could see how you could swing that....soon it will be sponsered. Your airbag deploys and you get, "*george foreman's voice*Car trouble? You should have called Meineke, for repairs done right the first time!......*operator*OnStar, how can I assist you?....."

i called 911 once to report and accident. It was busy. no joke.
didn't make me feel safe.

if onstar was calling while i was dealing with the accident, helping people out of cars, that could be a good thing. just playing devil's advocate...
