So I've been working in this IT group. Everyone's a pretty good programmer. There's this one worker that's been here for over 25 years.

He was fiddling with this one computer for this entire week and I finally asked him on Friday what the problem is and he said "the mouse isn't working."

I saw that it was a PS2, so I said "since it's a PS2 mouse, you gotta reboot to make it work"

he said.. "(moment of thinking silence).... ohh. Playstation 2 or something right?

I tried to keep it cool, but inside I was thinking "wtf?"

PS/2 port Last modified: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

A type of port developed by IBM for connecting a mouse or keyboard to a PC. The PS/2 port supports a mini DIN plug containing just 6 pins. Most PCs have a PS/2 port so that the serial port can be used by another device, such as a modem. The PS/2 port is often called the mouse port.
The PS/2 connector was used in IBM's PS/2 line of personal computers and was widely adopted by other manufacturers.

If he was there for 25 years that means he was an old cobol programmer most likely. From my experience, a lot of cobol programmers haven't adjusted that well to life outside their old mainframe world and aren't really that good with PCs overall.

He was trying to be hip and talk down to your age. ;)

I cringe when people hot plug PS2 or serial port stuff... first thing you learn from A+ cert is not to do that. You can do it without damaging things most of the time, but you're not SUPPOSED to do it. Besides, what's the biggest selling point of USB ? Uhuh... that's why.

The most dangerous thing in the world is a programmer with a screwdriver. Be glad he only had a mouse!

I don't cringe, I've been doing it for ages.
And what is wrong w/ hot-plugging serial upuorut devices? It has worked fine every time I've done it, since back when I had a 28k modem. PS/2 is fine as well, yo just have to restart.
Who cares what you're supposed to do?
And I've helped s few people study for A+...and I really don't care for it. Every book and practice test I've seen has been riddled with problems, and focuses way too much on thigns you don't need to know about, like laser printers.

People think of IT as this monolithic thing, this big bloc of knowledge that you either know or do not know. Such is not the case.

What's the biggest selling point of USB besides speed benefits ? Why did they feel the need to mention that ?

coders aren't hardware people.IMHO,they are a breed unto themselves, hell,I can tell the slightly off tone of a server hard drive or fan going bad from 2 rooms away.I can't write code worth a fiddler's damn but I can dx if it's a hardware or software issue pretty darn quickly and accurately.

Btw,if I had $1 for every time I've heard or actually seen somebody unplugging/reinserting a PS2 mouse or keyboard into a running rig I'd be retired now.

One port for everything, so we don't have to explain about PS/2, serial, paralel, etc. (U[niversal]SB)
AFAI ever knew, serial was hot-pluggable. always worked for modems, mice, good old laplink, etc. :)

I have a guy I work with, smart as a whip, he can program with the best of them. Does stuff in vbs that I only dream about doing and makes it look easy.
But do you know where he comes for adivce on hardware, setups, memeory testing, Citrix, server, etc. etc. etc.??

Thats right...he comes to me...being in IT doesnt mean you know squat about computers.....it doesnt mean you know everything...it means you might do something other than desktop support. :)
