People that don't say "thank you" after you say "Bless you" or "God bless you" when they sneeze

You're in the office/at the mall/in the park. Someone sneezes. You say "Bless you" or "God bless you." They heard you; you KNOW they heard you. They say nothing. This pisses me off to no end.

I was just speaking face-to-face w/a coworker. She had to sneeze. She turned her head (good) and covered her mouth (more good) I said "bless you" and she just picked up the conversation right where she left off right B4 she sneezed. What's up with this lack of manners these days? How long does it take to say "thanks?" It's not like you have to sit down and write an thank-you-note or something. Sheesh.

This goes back to a lack of common courtasy... It's all the parents' fault! If you cannot be a good parent then DO NOT REPRODUCE!!

What's even worse is when someone sneazes and nobody says "bless you" or "gazoontite" (sp?)

...and why is that? Tradition? What if we don't believe in god?

"Gesundheit" doesn't have to do with God... it just means "good health". So say that. :)

If someone says 'bless you' after I sneezed, I say nothing. If someone says 'Gesundheit' or 'Gezondheid', I say 'thank you' (or 'danke' or 'bedankt').

No one has ever said 'bless you' to me after I sneezed, so no problems so far :D

I find it ridiculous that you think that this rule of saying "thank you" for your "god bless you" must be applied when someone sneezes. People are different, they do what they think they should do in situations, I really doubt people are TRYING to be rude when they don't say "thank you" its just that they have never done that, so they find it awkward, go find something important to whine about.

I think people used to believe that evil spirits would enter your body when you sneezed. Thats where the bless you came from. I always like gesundheit myself.

Whenever people around here sneeze I say "Apartheid!" instead. Usually throws them off for a couple minutes. ;)

Far as I understand it. Bless you goes back to ancient time when if you sneezed it could mean your getting very very very ill.
These days all it means is allergies or a cold so Bless you is kind of outdated. I think take a sudafed would be more appropriate these days. :p

Fir - If you really meant that then you lack some serious manners.

My stepson's friend always asks to be excused before he get up from the dinner table. He says Yes mam, and No sir. He is very well mannered. I'm impressed with his behavior. But his behavior is due to his parental guidance at home.

manners are all a matter of opinion, and if parents beat them into their kids, i am not impressed at all, it just means that the parents beat them into the kids, big deal, ooo, impressive.

Well, TheShiz, you sound to be a rude, crude, inconsiderate and socially inept person. Manners are a good thing out in the real world. Lack of them will get you kicked out of social circles, not invited to "off-duty" business gatherings, etc. But, you knew that already, right?

I never meant this to turn into a God Thread. Not the issue. Manners is the issue. I didn't think of it at the time, but "Gesundtite" (sp?) is fine and dandy by me. I was raised to say "Bless you" or "Salute" (pronounced Sa-luud in Italian)

Whatever.

hey, i have manners, its just that I don't find the "bless you" stuff to be very important, and I'm not easily impressed by trained kids.

Tim

also, these social rules were just made by society so people know what they are suppose to do in certain situations, a lot of times it is crap though, I don't care about someone's learned response as much as what they are really feeling.

I usually don't say "Thank You". I didn't ask to be blessed for sneezing so I don't think anyone has the right to get mad if I don't give thanks. I think a lot of people expect a "Thank You" and the only reason they do things for others to get one, not because they actually want to help. Maybe I'm just an a*shole.

wtf?!? why would you need to say anything? It's a friggin bodily function, a sneeze, how can it possibly be bad manners to not say anything? By saying something you are insinuating that you actually believe someone's soul may escape their body or an evil spirit may enter during a sneeze.........

Behaviour of this is silly, I get angry when people say "god bless you" when I sneeze. Not everyone is christian...

I think it just boils down to courtesy and manners. I can't see anyone not knowing to say thank you for a bless you.
