People....Smile!!!

Let's say you're walking down a corridor or hallway in a particular building. You see someone coming the opposite way, towards you. You make eye contact. I usually smile, or say "hi" or something to that effect. Nothing over the top, just a simple, friendly acknowledgement. Many return the favor. But many just give you this stare....they'll stare you in the eye the whole time they walk past you, never changing facial expression.

Why are some people so reluctant to be polite?

I pass/deal with many many many people everyday, eventually it gets old.

A smile and a nod? How lazy are you? 😉

edit-I'd also like to clarify. I'm not talking about busy streets or whatever. I'm talking about, like in my dorm, where I'm walking alone down the hall, and someone else walking alone down the hall comes the opposite way. Why just glare in that situation?

I think it all depends on your environment. I used to work for Princeton University in a huuuge Physics Laboratory. I never EVER got a hello from those weirdo scientists. I used to go up to their chaulk-boards which were riddled throughout the building and change exponents from 3 to 2, or +'s to -'s. Had to take revenge on those bastards. BTW, if we never acheive cold-fusion as a main source of energy, now you know I'm part of the reason.

BUAHAHAHA!

I'm lazy enough not to give two flying fvcks about that person walking the opposite direction.

What social norm came into play that says I have to acknowledge your presence because you're walking the opposite direction? As well as be happy about it, or fake being happy about it.
I think the best is when someone asks "hows it going" and I respond truthfully.

Wow, so polite. I think it's truly sad when people are this rude, and proud of it!

Who said I'm proud? I'm being truthful. Someone asks me how I am, I'm not going to lie to them.

I usually nod to someone, or make some attempt at acknowledging their existance, but really I don't FEEL like it all the time. I have to deal with so many people and be fake all damned day for work, I honestly don't want to carry that on all day.

Mabey I have something on my mind, mabey I've had a horribly bad day, mabey I feel like sh!t, mabey I just don't want to look your ugly mug in the eyes.
It's truly sad that you actually give a sh!t if some stranger nods and smiles at you.

I'm not the happiest person in the world, but I do take the time to nod or say hi... I don't have to commit to a full conversation.

Sampson speaks more like a bitter man...lighten up.

Sometimes I smile, sometimes no. I usually atleast do a fake quick smile, you know where the one where you just barely make the corners of your mouth turn up.

But why do people have to smile back or say hello just because you do? I get tons of dumb questions a day, does that mean I have to answer all of them? You should smile at people because you want to, not because you're expecting something back. What irks me even more is when I try to walk past someone in my way and I say "Excuse me" and they don't move and don't say anything. At least then their unresponsiveness actually causes me some sort of real inconvenience.

Gulzakar: I fail to see how me not wanting to be fake to people equates to being bitter.

I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm talking about the people who DO stare you in the eyes, but when you smile or nod, they just keep staring at you, all cold and hard lol. You dont have to look at me, but if you're gonna stare at me, how bout a smile?
