People selling ancient computer parts in classifieds

I need to either write an open letter, or start reselling stuff myself... my god.

People selling 14" CRTs for $75, old Compaqs with P3s for $200 and shit. Used Dell keyboards for $10.

wtf?

I'd love to know if they actually sell this stuff at these prices. I can go to the government surplus place here and get a $15 system that, parted out and sold for the prices I see here, would net me like $200.

Isn't it pretty obvious that they don't?

People around here list shit on kijiji for ridiculous prices all the time.

I saw a 20+ year old couch someone was asking $800 for. They posted that all summer.

And a few weeks ago I saw an old VHS camcorder, the kind you have to rest on your shoulder to hold up. It was just a consumer model, so nothing special and the guy wanted $1200.

On a side note, my company just paid $230 directly to Dell for a refurbished motherboard to put in one of our computers. The computer is 6 years old, and the MB we got is actually rusty and has been used and abused.

So even companies pull this shit with computer parts, and yes idiots actually buy them.

I should have put all of my old EDO memory up on craigslist. I tossed out a couple of months ago.

Many people will list what they paid for an item; not realizing that sentimental value is worthless.

I had a CRT to get rid of recently, worked fine. Based on how many I saw on craigslist I couldn't have gotten more than $5. Went into the trash. Sad really how "perfectly good" stuff is just so useless now that it's worth nothing.

The thrift stores around here started refusing to take CRTs because they had so many and they never sell. It's hard to justify spending more than change for a CRT anymore when you can get a small LCD for < $50 and the power savings pay for the difference pretty fast.

i'd pay $10 for a old school mechanical clicky dell keyboard.

Mechanical is an entirely different story. That's one ancient part that actually goes up in value... I don't think I've ever used a Dell mechanical but I've seen old IBMs for like $100+ quite a bit

I bought a Razer mechanical because it was the least expensive mechanical I could find at the time and I love it. I absolutely cannot ever go back to a rubber dome kb.

Most computer illiterate people don't understand how quickly computer parts devalue and become obsolete.

The average person thinks a 5 year old computer is still "modern."

I've got a 19" Micron CRT that's actually a rebadged Sony. It does 1600x1200@85Hz and has an awesome picture. It's also the size of a LazyBoy recliner and weighs 150 pounds. I literally cracked a cheapie WalMart desk in half once when putting it down. It works so I don't try to sell it but I don't try to sell it b/c nobody will buy it.

I have tons of 10-year old hardware that will be going in the trash very soon. 🙁 I'll try to sell the SCSI drives and cards for whatever I can get for them, but the crappy PCI video cards with the 8MB of memory are trash. Out of all the hobbies I have had, computers has truly been the biggest money black hole/poor return on investment.

I had a Mitsubishi Diamondtron 19" up on craigslist for $20 and never got one bite. CRT's are not easy to sell. I'll probably just give it away.

CRT's "19 and above fetch $20-30 around here, entry level LCD ("19 or above) is around $100 right?

I buy and sell on craigslist and the great deals are gone. The best deals are literally free on the sidewalk. I always stop when I see an LCD monitor setting out for the trash. 90% of them have bad caps and they do sell on craigslist if you price them below the resellers.

15" LCDs routinely sell for about $50, and I see used ones a bit larger for about the same. So I suppose in the 19" range a CRT is going to be considerably cheaper than an LCD of that size but it's really not worth the savings in my book. 22" widescreen LCDs can be had for $90-100 if you watch for deals.

Of all the things to save a few bucks on, the monitor isn't where I'd do so... a 22" LCD v.s. a 19" CRT is a huge upgrade IMO. That, and I'm not sure what the real-world power consumption difference is but I'm guessing the LCD will save you enough on the power bill to cover that spread fairly soon.

Keeping the old CRT as an emergency back if the flat panel gets damaged. Children and grandkids have a habit of reaching/climbing.

CRTS are basically worthless now
FWIW I just gave away a 20" Sony Trinitron Monitor on my local CL
I see old stuff being advertised all of the time for an insanely high price (A "Fast" P4 computer only $250)

I like the newer LCD TV's and monitors but they get damaged too easily
I found a 37" LCD in the trash heap where I live and the screen was intact so I took it a few new caps and it works

Yep, my old gaming rig, upgraded over many years, now sits fully functioning but I cannot even get $50 for it. I'll use it as some kind of ip camera server shortly I guess.

I have three TVs now all with VGA inputs 🙂
