I have been thinking on this matter for the last few days now. I guess it comes down to this.
Despite the fact that Stats are fun, and I like them a lot, that is not the main reason I do SETI@Home. I do it because I like the thought that it might be my computer that processes the WU that contains the trace of a signal from a distant civilization, or the radio emanations from some new type of astronomical phenomena. Used/Already processed WU's hold no interest for me. I came to this conclusion when trying to decide whether or not to bid on the accounts up for sale.
I do, however take an extreme interest in making sure every WU I download gets processed and returned to the people at Berkeley. I have even gone so far as using 3.5" floppies to transfer uncrunched or partially crunched WU's back to my home machine when upgrading the machines at my friend's store to a Service install. If people want to bid on crunched WU's, I have no problem with that. I just will not be one of the people doing it. I will, however, happily upgrade my computer and build more computers, as well as assimilating any I can, in the name of processing new WU's. 🙂
