all the bad press indonesia gets about terrorism and uprisings and muslim extremists.. so far i've found them all unwarranted. maybe some areas are unsafe, like aceh, but for the most part, the people here have been extremely nice. i've had no problems admitting i'm american. i get better reactions saying i'm american here than i did when i was in australia. people say, 'america! powerful country' in admiration, while in oz, sometimes i got a 'pfft, arrogant, ignorant americans' response.

just thought i'd share. lots of people from this forum have told me they'd love to visit australia and new zealand, but having been there, and now here... if i had to do it all over again, i'd totally give oz and nz a miss.

well if you go there.. dont be white...or "american". then u'll be safe. "most people are nice" isn't enough. it only takes 2 kidnappers to really f*xor over your trip

You had problems in NZ? I was just there a couple of months ago and didn't have any poor reactions to my nationality, except for a canadian couple we met, but that was mostly just playful ribbing back and forth.

Just wait till word gets back to base that some whitey's prancing around town like he owns it, then you'll really have a good trip.

Why risk getting killed when you can go to Hawaii or Florida and be treated properly? You don't even need a passport.

Besides the war-torn Aceh, when's the last time you heard an American got kidnapped in Indonesia?

Well, we all heard about those Aussies being blown up and we know that they thought they were Americans so there you go. :p

you haven't travelled much, have you? you don't need to go to extremes, but there are lots of nice places outside of the states....

It's because the media only reports the bad.

So that's all we hear about, and .. automatically assume that's all that goes on, lol.

No. You got it wrong. When Indonesians say:
america! powerful country = america! powerful country(but you's a small ass tard. me nice now, me chop chop kill you tonite. hahahaha.)

No matter where you go, it's always safe untill you become a dead meat that you can't think about 'safe'.
And, yes! Iriq is safe! Don't believe the media!

(I've been to some of supposed-to-be dangrous countries and I, too, found out that it was safe as nothing happened to me. But, I would never say those are safe countries as I know I was one of a few those lucky ones.)

hey I am from Indonesia. glad you have a chance visiting our beautiful country :) Generally most Indonesian are extremely nice to "americans" or "caucasians" in general. Most indonesian highly respect caucasians and regard them as smart, powerful and rich.

Glad you loved your trip. Which part did you go to?

That was more tear dropping than Titanic and Pearl Harbour combined.

I'm sure that the world is a lot safer than the media portrays it but I have to wonder if you would draw more attention if you were caucasian Mark.

airfare costs keep me out of that part of the world, not worry.
I always have a good time in Mexico, best value for the dollar from the west coast.

I don't know about you but I would much rather vacation in Australia than Indonesia. I have never met anyone the least bit unfriendly in Australia, once people there find out you are an American (as soon as you open your mouth and speak) you are showered with attention. I hardly ever had to buy my own drinks and twice someone anonimously paid for me and my friends dinners. Also going to a club or bar at night you will get alot of attention from women, they know you are there for a short while and will definitely provide a ....... warm welcome to their country:)

well, i didn't find people unfriendly, and when i did say i was american, the reaction was usually positive. but since i'm asian in appearance, i dont always let on i'm american, and then you'd be surprised what sort of things i overheard!!

yeah, if i was just looking for a vacation, i'd probably go to australia too. but for really unique experiences that make great stories to tell friends about, i'd go somewhere else!
