People raising monkeys as children?

So I was watching 60 Minutes last night, and they had a report on these people that were raising small monkeys as children.

They had this one weird old couple that would take their monkey to the playground and stuff. But then the monkey was like biting and scratching kids, yet parents were still letting their kids near the monkey.

This just seems insane!

Not banana cream, then?

they are not raising monkeys, they're experimenting a new kind of breed in hope of one day build an army to take over the planet...of the apes.

Sounds like an interesting experiment. What kind of monkeys are we talking about though? Even a young chimp is much stronger than the average human and could tear up a human child easily.

They were like tiny white faced monkeys from South America. The sad part was is people were like removing the monkeys teeth and in some cases the fingers because they simply got tired of the monkeys attacking. You think someone would learn. If your dog attacked you, you would get rid of it right, but if a monkey attacks you, you just think aww how cute and faun over it.

Like Rocksteady said, just when you think Americans can't get any dumber.

this really isnt new, its been happening for years. and look one of these monkeys managed to become POTUSA

There's a professor here (University of Tennessee Chattanooga) who did a project on that. Chantek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chantek). Yeah, that's my anthropology department. She's a loon. Why?
"Miles would prefer freedom for Chantek, even going so far as to advocate personhood for Chantek and other great apes. The term personhood is often ascribed by experts to animals who demonstrate conscious awareness, language, and acculturation. Miles and like-minded advocates seek to expand personhood to great apes, to the extent that?eventually?legal rights of personhood would be conferred under the law.

To further her objectives, Miles created 'Project Chantek', seeking to better understand the mind of an orangutan. Miles hopes her findings will help ascertain how human symbolic systems may have evolved and developed. Uniquely, her project emphasizes development of cultural models and processes in Chantek?s upbringing. Her work is supported by the Chantek Foundation, whose mission is to develop greater scientific understanding of orangutans, to support cultural and language research with orangutans, to promote orangutan conservation and establish culture-based great ape sanctuaries, and to foster education programs that will facilitate understanding of great apes as persons, thereby building a bridge between humans and great apes."

She has tenure (somehow) and her linguistics class is renowned for being complete BS...

Where there is fire, there is smoke. And in that smoke, from this day forward, my people will crouch and conspire and plot and plan for the inevitable day of Man's downfall - the day when he finally and self-destructively turns his weapons against his own kind. The day of the writing in the sky, when your cities lie buried under radioactive rubble! When the sea is a dead sea, and the land is a wasteland out of which I will lead my people from their captivity! And we will build our own cities in which there will be no place for humans except to serve our ends! And we shall found our own armies, our own religion, our own dynasty! And that day is upon you NOW!

tf, I don't think monkeys were biting and scratching kids and parents didn't care.
Even a young chimp is much stronger than the average human and could tear up a human child easily.
Technique. I can submit an orangutan easily due to superior mat-skills.

I think EU recently or something like that said chimps can be considered human from a legal perspective.

Monkeys are nasty little fvckers, I wouldn't want a pet one that's for sure.

I hate monkeys -- can't understand why anyone would want one as a pet. That's also how Planet of the Apes will get started. Raise them like humans and eventually they'll get human-like intelligence. Pretty soon, we've have species conflict as they want to date our daughters but we want to "protect our women" from them.
