I find it annoying to see people try to hock their used goods in the forsale forum for the exact same price it would cost new. Of course most anandtech members are smart enough not to bother but I imagine some newbies must be taken in, thinking they are getting a good deal.

Another annoying fact is when people list their stuff and compare it against pricewatch. I mean really, just because a P3600B is 155 on pricewatch, people try to sell it for 150. Oh hell, the freaking 1GIG is 150 on pricewatch as well, don't try to sell a 600B for the same price. I always feel like flaming someone but of course that would be rude.

Part of free-trade is the ability to ask whatever price you want for an item. Competition will naturally keep prices low.

FS: My toenail clippings, $1,000 shipped

You want them? You pay my price.

nobody makes you buy it...., a 600B processor may be worth more because its the last of the Katami line, and some motherboards can't support Coppermine CPUs (although undoubtedly it is not worth that much more)

I would disagree. From what I understand, the for Sale/Trade Form was supposed to be for some members of a "community" to get together and help eachother out. If one is trying to make a profit, they would go to ebay. But then again, I have been wrong before.

Free trade still applies, just like the classified section of your local newspaper.]

And as for the Katmai 600's, they are are commanding a surprising price. For some applications the larger 512K cache is more valuable than the faster 256K cache. As the fastest of the 512K Katmai P3's, they are quite expensive both new and used.

Supply and Demand right Viper?

Question...

Demand for a product skyrockets overnight, and you don't have the supply to keep up with the demand. What should you do?

Raise price to try to slow down the demand, or run out of stock??

You don't raise prices to slow demand, you raise prices to maximize profit. If demand is high and supply is low, the market wil (usually) bear a high(er) price. The key is finding the the perfect balance between price & volume sold.

How do you control prices?

Prices are controlled by competition. People can't charge outrageous amounts for something that everyone has, because there will always be someone willing to sell for less. Less money is better than no money.

The sole exception is the case of a monopoly, when only one entity has a product. They can charge whatever they want for it, because they have no competition.
