I never did get why that was so huge a thing around here. People still celebrate the day that South Carolina attacked itself to start a war, they still seem to have bad things to say about yankees every few days. I can say more but I want to know what y'all think.

Why? Because Steinbrenner's an ass.

Oh wait, you meant it the other way ;)

I have nothing against Yanks.

And no one I've met here does.

Maybe you just haven't been to the good places of the South.

(Sorry, caps lock was ON)

You guys didn't have a civil war.

But back to the original question. Why yankee animosity? Because they're sore losers. Also explains the Solid South, from about 1868-1968.

League of the South

America is only a geographical expression. Metternich's joke was made originally at the expense of Italy, but there are all too many modern states that have tried to build artificial national identities out of the ruins of historic and traditional regions -- the provinces, the sticks, the boondocks, the places where real people live, write poetry and pay their taxes.

In this respect, American Southerners have much in common with the Scots and the Welsh in Britain, the Lombards and Sicilians in Italy and the Ukrainians in the defunct Soviet Union. All have made enormous economic, military and cultural contributions to their imperial rulers, who rewarded their loyalty with exploitation and contempt.

In the United States, where ethnic slurs are punishable as hate crimes, it is still socially acceptable to describe Southerners as "rednecks" and "crackers," even though Southerners have, in fact, contributed to American culture, high and low, to a degree vastly out of proportion to their numbers.

Never heard of the Solid South.
Did live through a little of the Dixiecrat BS, the whole segregationalist Strom thurmond-Jesse Helms thing.

There is actually very little animosity in the south towards our Yankee captors. ;)

There are pockets of resistance in trailer parks in various places... but that is not at all the norm. I believe that Hollywood does its level best to perpetuate a negative image towards Southerners... and the great majority do nothing to deserve it.

I was implying that the war was not over.

If you had read all of our bumper stickers (or primary means of communication, besides CB radio), the south will rise again. ;)

I'm sure that would be a lot harder to do this time, considering Omaha has all the bombers and the South's pretty exclusionary.

Nah, met a lot of great people down here. I enjoy it down here immensely. But there are a lot of annoying things too, and part of that's the rebel flag, the racism, the way so many are against people who are from up North, even though the greater part of people that are from up there immigrated after the war.

I always thought it was funny that Southerners are very quick to identify themselves as such, but those of us in the North never identify ourselves in this way. "I'm from the South" vs. "I'm from Deleware."

its because if you go north
1) the food sucks (its too damned english)
2) the beer sucks (its too damned pissy)
3) you can't get an actual coke (always pepsi, and they never warn you by saying "we have pepsi is that ok?")
4) you can't get dr pepper
5) its too frickin' cold
6) no college football of any consequence in new england/new york/new jersey/MD/delaware

There's a lot of southern pride in the Southeast.

As for the food, it's more ethnic. It tends to be more authentic, in my opinion. Most things in the southeast are countrified. No good college football in the old northeast but that's where most of the old top notch schools (Ivy League, technical, and a lot of the superior liberal arts schools) are. UMass and UConn aren't looking to compete against, say, Michigan or Alabama. And those areas have generally been weaker for emerging HS talent than Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Seriously doubt you can't get Coke. Coke was national long before Pepsi, made here in NC, was. Dr. Pepper, sure. Cheerwine too. And sweet tea is scarce. But there are plenty of other fine things that norhteasterners enjoy.

Check out this map... it may surprise you.

That map doesn't surprise me in the least... the more populous states have more hate groups, which would make sense even if I were to assume that racist sentiment was uniform nationwide.

Unsurprisingly the southern states have more groups than the northern ones, but CA and TX are extremely large states

Edit: One more thing, I never understood why "Yankee" is often used as an insult. Additionally, I find it slightly ironic that Southerners use it to refer to Northerners while foreigners often use it referring to all Americans. (Southerners are Yankees too! :p)
- and yes, I do realize that the origins of the Southern use of the word come from the Civil War, but that use is rather outdated, considering.
