people looking in our windows at home!

Cliffs:
1. live next to some dudes
2. some dudes have been looking in bedroom window at gf, including at night
3. don't know for sure what dudes
4. advice?

Back Info:
My gf, another girl, and I moved into a new place early this summer. It's part of a group of single homes and duplexes all owned by the same landlord, with no fences between them, and driveways that sort of wrap around behind the buildings. Point is, there's not much seperation between the houses. But there are shrubs in the middle of the back lawns to kind of seperate out the "sides."

The Problem:
When we first moved in, one day when I wasn't there, some mexican guys from next door were sitting right under our bedroom window on lawn chairs. when my gf woke up from her nap and heard them, she shut the window and the blinds, and they said lewd comments about her in spanish (my gf understands spanish pretty well). when i got home and heard about it, i threw their lawn chairs into their own driveway. they didn't put them back.

several times since then, she has found herself being watched through the window by guys from over there (one window is visible from their driveway). when she sees them, they laugh and talk sh!t in spanish. she gets scared, so she can't say for sure if they are the same guy(s) or whatever, and we don't know which units they live in or if they actually live there or are just visitors.

last night, my gf was lying on the bed petting our cat when she saw a mexican man standing outside our bedroom window, in the side yard, where it is dark. when she saw him, he walked away like nothing happened. she ran and got me, and I went outside to investigate/confront him, but there was no one there.

Advice?
I already told my gf to never have windows open when I am not home, and if she sees anyone looking in our windows to call the police IMMEDIATELY and run to get me as she calls them, and scream that she is calling the police so the man/men know she isn't fvcking around.

Again, because I haven't been there for any of this, I don't know if it has always been the same guys, if they actually live next door, which unit they might live in, etc. I have pointed out that they were all mexican because it is a common thread and because it explains their behavior in talking crap in spanish (it is my experience that they assume you can't understand them... i had a gardener cheerfully greet me as "dumbass" the other day, and i almost knocked his fvcking face in). however, this does NOT necessary mean they have always been the same people or that they are necessarily dangerous beyond being annoying peeping toms. my mexican friend tells me that in mexico it is common for guys to leer and cat-call at women...

So, do I just start knocking on doors and making suggestivly threatening comments to whoever opens the door? I'd considered saying something like, "You should know there has been a guy looking in people's windows. If you see him, you should call the cops, because if I see him first, I'll bash his fvcking head in." But that doesn't really seem like a smart thing to do, especially considering that mexican dudes often value pride, and any slight threat or affront, and they'll get really mad, really quick (i base this off of what i've been told by mexican friends). i don't want them encouraged to do something when i'm not home. at the same time, i don't want someone slowing building his courage to rape my gf or our roommate! I should point out that both my gf and roommate are pretty attractive, and my gf in particular is like a magnet for mexican guys (she has darker skin and ambiguous race).

I've also lightly tossed around the idea of getting a gun. Our neighborhood isn't that great to begin with, and I often have lots of valuble musical equipment in the house, though I do my best to conceal it. I assume a short-barrel pump-action shotgun is the best option for home defense? like i say, i'm not really planning on running out and buying one, since i'm generally pretty anti-gun, but it just seems like the DISPLAY of force (should i ever catch him in the act) would be effective.

anyway... thoughts?

edit: i suck at teh italics

Call the cops.

And slap yourself for even thinking of gunning down a peeping tom. That's a great way to end up in jail.

first set of advice, fix the italics in your post

next, call up your local spanish thug and have him have a "chat" with your neighbors. if you don't know the local spanish thug, your next bet is to collect evidence against them, I reccomend cameras.

don't worry, i wasn't planning on shooting anyone. i know that sometimes you can even end up in jail shooting someone who's inside your house, let alone outside it!

but yeah, i was thinking of calling the non-emergancy line and just explaining the situation.

i'll complain to the landlord. Then get a gun and then hang that gun on the bedroom window! Accidentally discharging the gun at night might also help.

here, the law on shooting someone that breaks into your house is simple. wait until they are inside the house and make sure that when they fall, they stay in the house. its self defence then

only read title .. but you might want to watch out  the maybe in the hood looking for the opportune moment for a drive by 😛

Sorry if this thought gives you nightmares

- Keep your blinds and drapes closed
- Talk to the landlord
- Call the police and ask them what to do about the situation

Might cost a little, but it'll ensure privacy and help you with your utility biils as well.

1. Mirror tint on windows. I mean the stuff that's impossible to see thru during the day, even when you're right on top of it. Only lets thru something like 10% light.

2. Right on top of that, the darkest tint you can find. And yes, you can layer tint on top of tint just fine.

This will effectively turn your windows into one way mirrors. You'll be able to see outside, but folks outside will just see themselves. Won't matter what time of the day or night it is either (one of the downsides to mirror tint is that when it's light inside and dark outside, it's easier to see thru.....thus the dark tint on top of it, that they won't see thru at all). It will also lower your a/c bills in the summertime, since you won't be letting in a bunch of heat thru the windows, and will reflect most of it back outside.

Other than that, heavy drapes will also help. You can also find tint that makes your windows opaque, but that means no one sees thru them, either direction.

Oh yeah, and a 357 magnum or 9mm handgun might be worth looking at too. Check your local pawn shops, and you'll probably find one cheaper than new. 🙂

A large dog, or a really good recording of one, might deter your hispanic friends from getting too close too!

A personal firearm is never a bad idea for home defense, but I wouldn't go around making it KNOWN that you have one, yes they can be a deterant, but frankly should be kept in reserve for if you actually NEED it. For a deterant, close the freaking blinds. I mean if you are having an issue with people looking in your window, don't open them. *shrugs* simple as that. Now that might not keep them from trying, but as someone else suggested collect evidence, cameras are a good idea, even a simple webcam place covertly looking out the window. *shrugs* Having been a cop for a while I would also recommend that you call the police, any time this happens, yes you may feel like you are being overly cautious, but peeping toms are NOT harmless, a good chunk of serial killers and rapists start as peeping toms.
