DaBuddha:
The assailant here, a 24-year-old man, apparently pulled alongside a 25-year-old female college student on a Texas state highway and shot her repeatedly through her car window. At least one bullet struck her head. He then ran her car off the road into a field, where he sexually assaulted her. It is not clear whether she was alive at the time; the article describes her as "motionless".
The assailant apparently has no history of felonies (though he may have committed misdemeanors or have a juvenile record; neither is mentioned). He confessed to the crimes about a week after the incident.
Pretty horrific conduct, for sure, and unless he puts up a vigorous defense of some kind of diminished capacity (as this sounds like the kind of thing that may have been prompted by cocaine- or meth-induced psychosis, or some organic psychiatric disorder), he will almost certainly get the death penalty. In this instance it is hard to argue with it, frankly.
