Hi,

Does anyone know which is the best/closest airport to Gaithersburg, MD (NIST Facilities)? I am flying in from Hawaii, so I don't yet know where my transfers will be on the mainland -- but I want to know where I need to end up :)

Also, is there public transportation between the airport and Gaithersburg?

Thanks for your help!

Well, you've only go three choices. BWI, National (the Reagan part still hasn't grown on me), and Dulles. Although BWI seems to be the busiest these days (because it is cheaper), it also seems to be the best for your access to Gaithersburg.

However, your familiarity with the area can be a great asset. National is the only airport directly accessible by MetroRail (subway). One line extends up to Shady Grove, which should be pretty close to Gaithersburg. SuperShuttle and a host of similar services can also get you to where you need to be.

And remember, the DC area may be the only place in the country where you HAVE to know how to get to your destination. Your cabbie will thank you!

Yeah, Shady Grove is the top left stop on the map; it's on the red line. There's a shuttle that goes back and forth between NIST and the Shady Grove Metro stop. Good luck!

There was a bus to Dulles from National(Reagan) called the Washington Flyer. $10-15 for the trip.

Are you staying at a hotel in Gaithersburg? Most hotels in the area have airport shuttles (either Washington Flyer or their own buses).

I am staying at the Gaithersburg Marriot -- I just called and they said I could arrange a Dulles drop off when I arrive (sort of vague, but I think that will work) :)

The Marriott's service is not that bad. I would get the number and call them as soon as you land. If you arrive near rush hour, it will take some time for them to get there to pick you up.

Next question: Are you going to visit us at NIST? If so, when? If the time works out, I might be able to pick you up and drop you off. I work at NIST. (Does anybody else here work at NIST?)
