I'd argue that 95% of people who walk into a dealership, get ripped off. Buying, selling, or getting it fixed.

There are certain professions that work out really well for those with few morals. Law, business, politics and sales, for example.

Good deals can be had but you gotta be willing to do the legwork. I need to write that book on "How to buy a car and not get @ssr@ped", lol.

Why do you think car salesmen have such a bad rep?

I was a lot attendant at a dealership while I was in HS. The sales staff were under pressure to squeeze extra money out of every sale. Each month, two paychecks were calculated for each salesman. One was what they would earn for their hours, one was what they would earn by commission. They got the bigger of the two checks. The third time they drew the salary check, they were fired.

I know that there are other dealerships with other policies, but I think that type of pressure is fairly common on the sales staff. When they get pressure, they pass that on to the customers, who, if they're not careful, end up paying for thousands of dollars worth of fluff in addition to their car.

Wow, that's harsh. And I thought I had it bad working for Best Buy.

It's true though. Customers always wonder why they get pressured so much to buy "extras" that they don't need - well, it's because we get pressured to sell you all that junk.

My old supervisor in the Computer department used to pressure us to sell the $120.00, 600w battery backup surge protecters even on the $399.99 Emachine computers.

"Just tell them they need it," he would say. Sad, sad, sad.

People always get ripped off in one way or another in one field or another. We can't all be experts at everything.

Then again there are people who just suck at life in general...

You can't call it getting "ripped off" just because someone didn't get the absolute best deal.

Now if you're talking about selling someone a POS car after rolling back the odometer and claiming it's a creampuff, that's different. But no business is obligated to voluntarily sell something for the lowest price they can live with.

If Macy's marks something down 25% this week, did last week's buyers get ripped off? No.

Didn't happen to my aunt. She was driving her NEW car and found a wrapper for a cheeseburger or something like that. She drove to the dealer and asked why it was there. He said: "When the boys were driving it down from connecticut they ate." My aunt said "Wait, It was driven from connecticut and only had 5miles on it? You mean to tell me it's 5miles from here (NY) to connecticut?." Long story short, she wouldn't get her money back until she sat in the window of the car dealership for 2.5 hours i think.

Dealers feel that women are less apt to fight for a lower, more fair price. Personally, If it were me (and yes, I'm a woman) I'd tell them to shove it and go somewhere else!

Just go in and be firm. Tell them you want a deal.

If not, you'll walk.

I used to work on a dealership that averaged like 6 grand mark up.

Trust me, they'd rather move the product faster with a 2G profit margin then keep the car sitting on the lot holding out for the 4 extra.

No, we can't all be experts in every field - but the smart people will at least do their homework and be knowledgable in a subject before approaching it with a wad of cash.
